Solar energy: Solar energy is a form of renewable energy that harness the power of the sun’s radiation to generate electricity or heat. There are two main technologies for capturing solar energy Photovoltaic (PV)solar panel: these panels directly convert sunlight to electricity using semiconductor typically silicon Concentrated solar power(CSP): this technology uses mirror or lenses to concentrate sunlight onto a small area, generating heat CSP is often used in large scale solar power plant

Background of solar energy : Solar energy refers to the radiant light and heat from the sun, harnessed using technologies like solar panel and solar thermal system It is one of the earliest sources of energy used by humans, with civilization relying on the sun for light, warmth, and agriculture However, modern harnessing of solar energy began in the 19 th century, when French scientist Edmond Becquerel discovered the photovoltaic effect, which is the foundation of solar power. Thus discovery led to the development of solar cell in the 20 th century, particularly after Bell Labs developed the first silicon- based solar cell in 1954.

Necessity of solar energy: Environmental impacts Energy security Sustainability Economic growth Energy access Cost efficiency

Application of solar energy Solar power generation Solar water heating Solar cooking Solar lighting Solar Desalination Solar powered transportation Solar powered gadget Solar air heating and cooling

Classification of solar energy utilization:

TYPES OF SOLAR ENERGY PHOTOVOLTAIC SOLAR ENERGY A photovoltaic cell, commonly known as solar cell, which converts solar Energy into electrical energy.

Solar thermal energy is the energy created by converting solar energy into heat and is one of the most cost effective forms of using solar energy . SOLAR THERMAL ENERGY

CONCENTRATED SOLAR POWER Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) is a type of solar thermal energy that uses mirrors or lenses to focus sola radiation onto a small area to generate high temperature heat.

PASSIVE SOLAR ENERGY Passive solar energy refers to the use of natural light and heat from the sun to warm a building or space without any active mechanical systems or technologies.

BUILDING INTERGRATED PHOTOVOLTAICS This includes the integration of photovoltaic (PV) panels into the building components, such as the roof ,walls, and windows. This type of solar energy is used to generate electricity for building ,reducing the need for traditional power sources .

ADVANTAGES OF SOLAR ENERGY Solar energy is a clean , renewable alternative to fossil fuels. Solar energy systems require little maintenance and usually only need to be cleaned a couple of times a year. Solar energy can provide energy independence Solar energy can reduce electricity bills and provide long-term savings Solar energy can increase a property’s value.

DISADVANTAGES OF SOLAR ENERGY Solar energy systems have high initial costs for purchase and installation. Solar energy systems only produce energy when the sun is shining. Solar energy systems can require a significant amount of land. Solar energy systems are most efficient on sunny days. Solar doesn’t work for every roof type. Solar energy storage is expensive.
