Report on action to be taken to reduce accidents Presented By: 1. Dhanad Khatu (66) 2.Yogesh Khedkar (67) 3. Karan Lavhare (68) 4. Sumeet Madharki (69) 5. Om Pawar (74)

Case study A massive fire broke out at an electric two-wheeler manufacturing unit in Sai Industrial Area, Katraj - Gujarwadi Road on Tuesday. The affected company, Bhushan Enterprises, reportedly had materials to produce at least 2,000 electric bikes, with around 150 partially assembled bikes destroyed in the blaze. The Pune Fire Brigade swiftly responded to the incident, deploying six fire tenders along with three PMRDA tankers and ten private water tankers to control the flames. The firefighting operation is currently ongoing. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. However, the cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage. Authorities are investigating the incident to determine the exact reason behind the blaze.

Possible Causes

EV RELATED CAUSES

1) Lithium-Ion Battery Thermal Runaway Overcharging or Deep Discharging: If the battery is charged beyond its safe voltage range or fully discharged frequently, it can become unstable and catch fire. Manufacturing Defects: Poor quality control in battery production can lead to internal short circuits, causing uncontrolled heating. Physical Damage: Dropped or impacted batteries may develop internal short circuits, leading to thermal runaway. 2) Battery Management System (BMS) Failure The BMS monitors battery health, voltage, and temperature. A faulty BMS may fail to detect overheating or overcharging, leading to uncontrolled thermal events. 3) Improper Storage of Battery Packs Stacking battery packs too close without proper ventilation can trap heat, increasing fire risks. Damaged or swollen battery cells stored improperly can lead to chemical leaks and explosions. 4) Faulty EV Charging Stations or Wiring High-power EV chargers generate heat. If not maintained properly, overheating, loose connections, or worn-out cables can cause sparks and fire. Cheap or counterfeit chargers may lack proper safety cutoffs, leading to battery overcharging and potential fire hazards

5) Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) in Battery Assembly During EV manufacturing, improper handling of battery cells or pack assembly can lead to static discharge, igniting flammable electrolytes inside batteries. 6) Use of Low-Quality Components Substandard battery cells, poor wiring insulation, or cheap connectors can fail under high load, leading to overheating and fire. Counterfeit or untested battery modules may have internal defects, increasing fire risks. 7) Thermal Expansion and Heat Dissipation Issues If battery packs are enclosed in a space with poor cooling, heat buildup can cause degradation and, in extreme cases, combustion. Lack of proper heat sinks or cooling mechanisms in high-power EV components can accelerate failures.

Safety Measures 1. Electrical Safety Measures 🔌 Proper Wiring & Circuit Protection ⚡ Avoid Overloading Electrical Circuits 🛠️ Regular Equipment Maintenance 🔋 Safe EV Charging Infrastructure 2. Battery Safety Measures 🏭 Safe Battery Storage & Handling 🔥 Prevent Battery Thermal Runaway 🚫 Prevent Physical & Mechanical Damage to Batteries
