Phrasal Verbs What are them, types and examples

What are them ? These are verbal structures composed of two elements Verb + partícula (adjective / adverb / preposition) Adjective: describe the qualities, states of being or quantity: enormous, doglike, silly, yellow, fun, fast, many, few, millions, eleven. Adverb: words that describe a verb (he sings loudly ), and adjective ( very tall), another adverb (ended too quickly) or a whole sentence ( Fortunately , I had brought an umbrella). To provide more information. Preposition: They give information about place, time, manner or reason 2

They are used to define specific actions or states. Therefore, from the same verb, it is possible to create compound verbs that are very different from each other: For example: "burn". Burn out: extinguirse ( fuego ), agotamiento ( físico o mental) o quemado Burn down: quemarse hasta cenizas Burn up: causar enojo o manejar a gran velocidad ). 3 What are they used for ?

T ransitive phrasal verbs   Bring back: Traer de vuelta . "I forgot my umbrella at home, so I need to bring it back with me." Call up: Llamar por teléfono . "I'll call up my friend and invite her to the party." Cross off: Tachar o marcar como completado . "I can cross off 'buy groceries' from my to-do list; I already did it." Dig up: Desenterrar o encontrar información . "I dug up some old photos from the attic." Dream up: Inventar o imaginar algo. "She dreamed up a brilliant idea for our marketing campaign." Eat up: Comer completamente o agotar algo. " The children ate up all the cookies." Fill up: Llenar algo por completo. " Please fill up the gas tank before we hit the road ." "Despite the challenges, we decided to carry on with the project." Check up: Hacer un chequeo médico o examinar algo. "It's important to check up on your health regularly." Check out: Revisar o investigar algo. "You should check out that new restaurant; I heard the food is amazing." Pull in: Llegar o detenerse en un lugar . "The train will pull in at the station in a few minutes." Run away : Escapar de un lugar o situación. " The cat ran away from the loud noise ." Run down : Agotar la energía o criticar negativamente a alguien o algo. " The long day at work ran me down ." Sell out : Vender todos los productos o boletos disponibles. " The concert sold out within minutes." Stand by : Estar listo o disponible para ayudar o actuar. " I'll stand by in case you need any assistance ." Separable phrasal verbs   Bring about: Provocar o causar algo. "His leadership brought about significant changes in the company." Bring over: Traer a alguien o algo de un lugar a otro . "Can you bring the snacks over for the party?" Call up: Llamar por teléfono . "I'll call my friend up and see if she can join us." Carry out: Realizar o ejecutar una tarea o acción . "The team will carry out the project as planned." Fill up: Llenar algo por completo . "Please fill the water pitcher up before we start the meeting." Move over : Moverse hacia un lado o dejar espacio para alguien. " Could you please move over so I can sit down ?" Pass on : Transmitir información o pasar algo a alguien. " She decided to pass the message on to her colleagues ." Rinse out : Enjuagar o limpiar algo con agua. "After using the paintbrush , be sure to rinse it out . " Run off: Imprimir o copiar algo, generalmente en una impresora. "I need to run off some copies of the report for the meeting." Sweep out : Barrer y limpiar una habitación o área. " Let's sweep the garage out ; it's quite dusty in there ."

Inseparable phrasal verbs   Back out of : Retirarse o cancelar una promesa o compromiso. "He promised to help , but he backed out of it at the last minute." Bear on : Tener relevancia o relación con algo. " The new regulations bear on our industry ." Come by : Visitar o adquirir algo. "Can you come by my office later today ?" Drop in at/ on : Visitar de manera inesperada o casual un lugar. " I'll drop in at the café after work ." Drop out of : Dejar de participar o abandonar algo, como una escuela o un proyecto. " She decided to drop out of college to pursue her passion ." Fall back on : Recurrir a algo como último recurso. " If the plan fails , we can fall back on our original strategy ." Fall out with : Pelearse o tener un desacuerdo con alguien. " She fell out with her best friend over a misunderstanding ." See about : Investigar o encargarse de algo. " I'll see about getting tickets for the concert ." See to : Encargarse de algo o ocuparse de una tarea. " I'll see to it that the problem is resolved." Talk over : Discutir o conversar sobre algo en detalle. " Let's talk over the proposal at the meeting."
