cause. What is a martyr? A martyr is someone who dies for what they believe in, just like
Maximilian Kolbe. Raymund Maximilian Kolbe was born January 8, 1894. He was born in
Zdunska Wola, in Poland. Both parents, Marianna and Juliusz, were very holy, and dedicated
much of their time and money to teach their children about the catholic faith. (Gale BIC, 2)
They were both poor weavers, who traded with Jewish merchants. From a young age,
Maximilian was very fond of his faith. He enjoyed church, and loved to pray. In 1907, Max and
his brothers decided to move to an all boys Franciscan school. Their mother was supportive of
this decision, because she wanted to shield the boys from the other sex. When he turned sixteen
in 1910, he was going to join the army, but his mother thought he was fit for the priesthood.
