Philosophy Of Rene Descartes
In modern philosophy, reality is viewed in a twofold manner: the immaterial mind
on the one hand and the extended body on the other. Also, we think of reality and
divided between the I subject and an external world of objects. This line of thinking
is attributed to Rene Descartes, widely credited as the father of modern philosophy.
Descartes was a proponent of metaphysical dualism. He believed that the mindand the
body are distinct substances. To Descartes, we can reach certain knowledge about the
mind and consciousness through introspection. He reasons that we cannot doubt our
existence as thinking things because the fact that we think is undeniable. However,
we tend to be fooled by our sensory experience of the world around us, so it is
possible to put the world outside of our minds into doubt. To Descartes, philosophy is
about attaining certain knowledge. We look upon the world as knowing subjects.
Descartes believed that we cannot properly philosophize without first establishing
certain principles to guide our investigation. We must doubt everything that can be
doubted, and only when we reach a position that cannot be doubted can we begin our
quest to understand reality. Since we begin with the thinking thing, the Cogito, the
mind has ontological precedence over the body. From Descartes onwards, the
ultimate questions of philosophy were viewed as being epistemic in nature. The big

HOW DOES ONE DEFINE ONE S HERITAGE
It has been said that One of the greatest regrets in life is being what others would
want you to be, rather than being yourself. What should matter is being true to
oneself and loving the person that you have become. This short story is narrated
by Mama who is telling her story of her two daughters, Dee and Maggie. Both
daughters live their lives in very different ways. In Dee s case, she goes out to make
all that she can of herself while leaving her mother and sister behind. Maggie stays at
home with their Mama and makes the most out of what surrounds her. All three ladies
have different perspectives of their own heritage and identity. The conflict in
Everyday Use is that Mama has these two daughters fighting over a quilt. In the end,
readers will find that what matters most is not forgetting where you come from and
who you are as a person. In Everyday Use Alice Walker emphasizes to her readers the
importance of self identities and family through her use of conflict, setting, and
characterization, suggesting that sometimes people are so motivated in pleasing
others while neglecting the things that matter to them the most.

Everyday Use story takes place in the late 1960s in the southern regions of America
during the time when African Americans were fighting for their identity and to

Early yesterday morning, a previously undiscovered species was found above the
snowline in the Mount Kosciuszko National Park, New South Wales. The discovery
was made by a the well known biologist, Dr. Ella Beard, who upon curiosity of
observing the snow fixed abnormally firmly to tree branches, climbed the tree and
discovered these small feathered creatures perfectly disguised as cumulated snow.
The creature, now known scientifically as Alborum Plumae, hides perfectly as snow
lumps on tree branches. It is believed to spend the majority of time in a stationary
position, only using its wings for flight from predators.
Many of the Alborum Plumae traits are easily comparable to birds. They has a thick
layer of down insulation, allowing them to retain warmth while sedentary,
zygodactyly feet for gripping branches, pneumatic bones to aid in flight, huddling
behavior for retaining warmth, and wings for escaping predators. It is not completely
bird like however, as it has sharp incisors for eating hard nuts found in gum trees in

1992). It is common for water systems to have small leaks but they usually do not
result in contamination as the positive flow of water pressure prevents inward
infiltration of the system but when there are breaks in the lines and pressure is lost,
contamination can flow back into the water lines.

Ties to Holden s Problems I felt like jumping out the window. I probably would ve,
too, if I d been sure somebody d cover me up as soon as I landed. I didn t want a
bunch of stupid rubbernecks looking at me when I was all gory (104). Holden is a
complex character with mixed emotions about everything; many times contradicting
his own thoughts and beliefs. Holden s struggles are due to the lack of parental
attention, the death of his younger brother, and his unusual relationships with other
characters in the novel, The Catcher in the Rye. My parents would have about two

Holden cannot deny this to his sister. Phoebe goes on to suggest that Holden needs
to realize that their brother is dead and there is no going back. Holden has problems

mother that her son is the most popular student in school. To Earnest s mother
Holden introduces himself as Rudolph, giving her the name of the janitor at school,
and lies further about his reasoning for leaving Pency Prep early stating he has a
tumor. This situation is detrimental for Holden because he continues to live his life
