Essential Drug Concept Essential medicines are those that satisfy the priority health care needs of the majority of population. They should be available at all times, in adequate amounts, in appropriate dosage forms and at affordable price. The World Health Organisation(WHO) published the first Essential Medicines List(EML) in 1977. 18 th WHO model EML published in April 2013.

Essential Drug Concept History: In 1970s, a vital role of governments in many countries has been recognized towards drug systems by the concern of WHO. The impact of these concept on health care ; To improve rational use of medicines and reduces irrational drug use. The importance of rational drugs align with clinical needs, in the right dose, and for an appropriate duration. Promotes cost effective treatment options.

Essential Drug Concept Advantages: More cost effective drug control, management, purchase, storage and distribution. Improved drug use safety and more efficient drug information including training to health care workers. Avoidance of ADR’s.
