EMPOWERMENT TECHNOLOGY Quarter 1 – Module 1 le 1 ICT in the Context of Global Communication
2 WHAT I NEED TO KNOW? What is Information and Communications Technology?
DIGITAL NATIVES A "digital native" refers to individuals who were born and raised during the age of digital technology. Unlike "digital immigrants," who learned to use technology later in life, digital natives are inherently familiar with computers, the internet, and various digital devices from a young age. This familiarity shapes their learning styles, communication methods, and interactions with the world. 3 A person born or brought up during the age of digital technology and therefore familiar with computers and the Internet from an early age.
Information and Communications Technology Information and Communications Technology (ICT) encompasses the use of various technologies such as mobile phones, telephones, computers, the internet, and other devices to locate, save, send, and manipulate information. It has simplified daily life, making gadgets essential for communication and work, facilitating long-distance communication, and supporting internet-based jobs. ICT has transformed education and contributed to economic modernization, enhancing convenience and connectivity in today's society. 4
ICT in the Philippines 5 The Philippines is recognized as the "ICT Hub of Asia" due to significant growth in ICT-related jobs, particularly in Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) and call centers. As of 2010, the ICT industry accounted for 19.3% of total employment in the country. Since the commercialization of the internet in 1995, it has profoundly influenced culture and commerce, enabling near-instant communication through various platforms like email, instant messaging, and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). The internet serves as a global network of interconnected computers, facilitating diverse online activities including social networking and e-commerce. Computer is an electronic device that manipulates and is capable of accepting, processing, displaying and storing data.
The World Wide Web The World Wide Web (WWW) is an information system that enables users to access and navigate interconnected documents via hyperlinks over the Internet. Invented by Tim Berners-Lee in 1989, the Web allows for the sharing of various types of content, including text, graphics, and multimedia, through web browsers like Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome. 6 Key features of the World Wide Web include: Hypertext Links: These links connect documents, enabling users to move seamlessly from one resource to another. Web Browsers: Software applications that facilitate navigation through web pages by interpreting HTML documents and managing user interactions. Content Variety: Documents can include a mix of text, images, audio, video, and interactive elements.
Web 1.0 or The Web (Static Pages) It is the “readable” phrase of the World Wide Web with flat data. A static pages, meaning users cannot interact with the page and the page is in read- only format. Examples of Web 1.0 applications are shopping carts, mp3.com, pdf file etc. 7
Web 1.0 Characteristics of Web 1.0 Website pages are static Website contents and layouts are inseparable Website contents are store in files Websites use proprietary HTML tags Websites do not embed guestbook in the content page Website forms are usually sent by email
Static Web
Web 2.0 or The Social Web It is the “writable” phrase of the World Wide Web with interactive data. Unlike Web 1.0, Web 2.0 facilitates interaction between web users and sites, so it allows users to interact more freely with each other. Web 2.0 encourages participation, collaboration, and information sharing. Examples of Web 2.0 applications are Youtube , Flickr, Facebook, etc. The term used to describe the collection of web application used for interaction and collaboration It was coined by Darcy DiNucci in 1999. It does not refer to a new version of the web, just a refocus of its use. Web 2.0 is more than the retrieval of information. It is the participation in a website. 10 (Dynamic Page)
Web 2.0 Characteristics of Web 2.0 1. It has user-generated contents 2. It has emphasis on user experience 3. IT has improved interoperability Dynamic Web 11
Feature of Web 2.0 1. FOLKSONOMY - This feature allows the user to categorize and classify information using keywords. Tagging (use of hashtag “#”) is one example of this which was popularized by social networking sites such as Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. 12 2. RICH USER EXPERIENCE - This feature refers to the dynamic content of the website where it responds to the user’s input. One good example is when you logged in using your user account in Facebook, the content that will be displayed on the page depends on the content of your account.
Feature of Web 2.0 13 4. LONG TAIL - This feature refers to services that are offered on demand rather than one-time purchase. At times, users can opt to go for time-based pricing instead of file size-based pricing or vice versa. 3. USER PARTICIPATION – This feature refers to the ability of the web to get participation for its audience. It means that the owner of the web is not the only one who can provide the content. Users and other viewers of the site can comment, provide reviews and evaluations, and answer a poll. 5. SOFTWARE AS A SERVICE - This feature allows users to subscribe to software only when needed rather than purchasing them. It is like renting a software for a minimal fee.
Web 3.0 or Semantic Web 14 The semantic web provides a framework that allows data to be shared and reuse to deliver web content specifically targeting the user. Search Engine will learn about you and your habits from each search you perform and will gather details about you from your previous activities like likes and social postings and present the answers as per your preferences.
15 Features Adheres to minimalist design Ever-present web Applies and uses Artificial Intelligence Uses the semantic web framework Web 3.0

For example, you can now use your smartphone to edit word documents and sync files to your personal computers.
31 2. Mobile Technology - This refers to the capabilities of mobile phones similar to the personal computers such as mobile network for internet connection and various operating systems. Mobile Operating Systems iOS for Apple devices such as the iPhone and iPad Windows Mobile developed by Microsoft for smartphones and pocket PCs. WebOS which is originally used by smartphones but now used for smart TVs Symbian which is the original smartphone OS used by Nokia devices Windows Phone OS which is a closed source and propriety OS developed by Microsoft Blackberry OS used in Blackberry devices Android as an open source OS developed by Google
