Ethical Considerations In Food Production Prepared by Berfin Aktaşçı – 22121205047 Fatema Abulnasr – 23121205930 Joud Abouabed – 22121205903 Leen Sami Abdullah - 22121205947
What is the genetic modification food? Genetic modification food is a special set of gene technology that alters the genetic machinery of such living organisms as animals, plants or microorganisms. Combining genes from different organisms is known as recombinant DNA technology and the resulting organism is said to be ‘Genetically modified’.
How can GMF be made? GMF’s are living organisms whose genetic material is artificially manipulated This creates combinations of plant, animals, bacteria, and virus genes that do not occur in nature
First, these foods are a born in places which experience frequent droughts (can be grown at places with extreme weather conditions A normal crops can grow only in specific season or under some favourable climatic conditions.
- These foods grow faster than the foods that are grown traditionally and that’s provides the population with more food. -they have an increased shelf life and hence there is less fear of foods getting spoiled quickly. -GMF’s are reported to be high in nutrients and contain more minerals and vitamins than those found in traditionally grown foods. -these foods are known to taste better.
1)It is believed that consumption of these GMF’s can cause the development of diseases which are immune to antibiotics. 2) Manufacturers do not mention on the label that foods are developed by genetic manipulation because they think that this would affect their business, which is not an ethical behavior 3)Many people are also not comfortable with the idea of transferring animal genes into plants and vice versa.
some of the transgenic crops transgenic crops grown commercially in field are herbicide and insecticide resistant soybeans, corn, cotton and canola. Other crops grown commercially and/or field-tested are sweet potato resistant to a virus that could destroy most of the African harvest, rice with increased iron and vitamins that may alleviate chronic malnutrition in Asian countries and a variety of plants that are able to survive weather extremes
Safety tests\ Allergenicity studies Safety tests in order to establish its safety for humans a more rigorous specific risk assessment will have to be carried out with several GM lines. Nutritional/toxicological testing on laboratory animals should follow the clinical, double-blind, placebo-type tests with human volunteers. Allergenicity studies When the gene is from a crop of known allergenicity, it is easy to establish whether the GM food is allergenic using in vitro tests, such as RAST or immunoblotting, with sera from individuals sensitised to the original crop. —issues from an allergic standpoint. These are the transfer of a known allergen that may occur from a crop into a non-allergenic target crop and the creation of a neo-allergen where de novo sensitisation occurs in the population.
Important The studies reviewed present evidence to show that GM plants are nutritionally equivalent to their non-GM counterparts and can be safely used in food and feed.
Future developments Do you think GMF is ethical in terms of production? Even though there are a lot of difference opinions about genetically modified food but The GM foods have the potential to solve many of the world’s hunger and malnutrition problems. But how?
Impact Of Food Production On Public Health Food ethics can be defined as ”food science, technology and their applications; researching the correct values at the stages of production, processing, distribution, trade and consumption of agricultural products, and the application of these values".
Ethics in food production These systems have many systems that contain many components (environment, human, raw materials, production methods and processes), as well as related to the environment and health. With these systems, food production, packaging, the rights of workers working in the production chain, etc. provides ethical analysis and guidance to subjects.
There are some important reasons for the prominence of food ethics; The importance of food for people's survival and in terms of their health status How food systems provide the diversity of nutrients that make up our diet Food production is an organic process that affects the biodiversity of living resources.
Public Health Public health can be defined as 'actions taken by a community or society to protect and improve the health and well-being of its members.
Compliance with ethical principles in food production is important both for consumer health pain and for the consumer not to be deceived economically .
When ethical considerations in food production are not complied with, from the point of view of the public; Problems caused by food consumption, especially food production, can cause health hazards, as well as a decrease in consumer well-being. Due to this, food poisoning and deaths as a result can be observed. Safe food production is at the heart of ethical behavior in the food field.
CHEATING, IMITATION AND TAGSHISH IN FOOD Today, manufacturers resort to various food tricks for unfair profit purposes. As a result of this, consumers suffer both economic losses and health problems. According to one approach, 7% of the foods marketed on a global scale are fraudulent, and according to another approach, 10% are fraudulent. Food cheats come across as imitation and tagshish in the most intense form in our country.
These tricks include adding vegetable oil by removing milk fat in dairy products such as cheese and yogurt, adding fats obtained from other plants other than olives to olive oil, selling some products with sugar content as honey, mixtures of species in meats, adding active substances that are prohibited to food supplements.
Today, access to food is seen as the most basic human right. It is known that people cannot live their lives without food and nutrition. For this reason, unethical movements are taking place in food production. Unethical actions carried out cause negative consequences to human health, the economy and the environment.
