INTRODUCTION
Bitter kola (Garcinia kola) is a plant commonly
used in traditional medicine in Nigeria (Akinpelu
et al., 2018)
Ithas been reported to have antimicrobial
properties, but more research is needed to
understand its bioactive compounds and
antibacterial properties (Okoro et al., 2019)

STATEMENT OF
PROBLEM
The emergence of antimicrobial resistance has
made it necessary to search for alternative
antimicrobial agents (Sibanda et al., 2017).
Bitter kola has been shown to have antimicrobial
properties, but its bioactive compounds and
antibacterial properties have not been fully
elucidated (Akinpelu et al., 2018).

JUSTIFICATION
The study will contribute to the search for
alternative antimicrobial agents (Okoro et al.,
2019).
It will provide information on the bioactive
compounds and antibacterial properties of bitter
kola (Sibanda et al., 2017).

AIM
To evaluate the bioactive compounds present in
bitter kola nut (Akinpelu et al., 2018).

OBJECTIVES
To evaluate the bioactive compounds present in
bitter kola nut (Akinpelu et al., 2018).
To determine the antibacterial properties of bitter
kola nut on some selected bacterial pathogens
(Okoro et al., 2019).
To compare the antibacterial properties of bitter
kola nut with those of standard antibiotics
(Sibanda et al., 2017).

MATERIALS
Bitter kola nuts, solvents, standard antibiotics,
selected bacterial pathogens, agar, petri dishes,
micropipettes, incubator, etc.

METHODS
Bitter kola nuts will be collected and dried (Akinpelu
et al., 2018)
The dried nuts will be extracted using solvents of
varying polarities (Okoro et al., 2019)
Theextracts will be tested for bioactive compounds
using standard methods (Sibanda et al., 2017).
The antibacterial properties of the extracts will be
tested using the agar diffusion method (Akinpelu et
al., 2018)

EXPECTED OUTCOME
Identification of bioactive compounds present in
bitter kola nut (Akinpelu et al., 2018).
Determination of the antibacterial properties of
bitter kola nut on some selected bacterial
pathogens (Okoro et al., 2019).
Comparison of the antibacterial properties of bitter
kola nut with those of standard antibiotics
(Sibanda et al., 2017).
