areaofapproximately3.288millionsquarekm.
Indiahasacoastlineofabout7,500kmwithmajorcities
includingBombay,Calcutta,Madras,andKochi(Cochin).
Thereare11major,16intermediate,and78minorportsin
India.
IndianlandmassisborderedbytheArabianSeatothewest,
theBayofBengaltotheeast,andthemainIndianOceanto
thesouth.

Isanareabeyondtotheterritorialsea.
Extendingseawardto200nmi(370km)outfromits
coastline.
Territorialwaterendsat12nmi(22km)fromthecoastline.
TheEEZincludethecontiguouszone.
Thecontiguouszoneisabandofwaterthatgoesfromthe
outeredgeoftheterritorialseatoupto24nauticalmiles.
IndiaiscurrentlyseekingtoextentitsEEZto350.

BytheearlyeightiesIndiaobtainedawideEEZofabout2.0134
millionsquarekmintheseaallalong7500kmlongcoastline.
Thelivingandnonlivingresourcesinthiszonemeasuredabouttwo-
thirdofcountry.
Tradingandtransportfacilitiesnavigatedthrougharea.
Millionsofpeoplelivingalongthecoastlinearedirectlyinfluencedby
oceanographyoftheEEZ.

8. Mineral Potential of the EEZ
Placer Deposits:
Ilmeniteplacer-RatangiriMaharashtra state south of the Bombay
west coast.
Placer deposits of the Narayanpur-Chatrapur-Goplapul coast and
Malud-Puricoast as well as Chilkalake ,Orissa state –Magnetite,
Ilmenite,Garnet, Sillimanite , Rutile, Zircon & Monazite.
In the coastal area from Kalingapatnamto Baruva, association of
Ilmenite-Sillimanite-garnet.

9. Phosphate:
Malabarcoastinphosphaticmudbank(1-5%P2O5).
AtBombay–Saurashtracoast.
PhosphaticnodulesarefoundnorthoftheAndamanIslandwith10%
P2O5.
Cobalt:
MangneseandCobaltcrustofTillanchandinAndamansea
(verylow0.08-0.25%)
Co–richcrustmayoccurinthrIEEZaroundLakshadweep
island,onbothsidesoftheninetydegreeEastRidge,N-
Andamansea.
