Definition The biological process of elimination of metabolically produced unwanted toxic, by-products out of the body is termed excretion .
TYPES OF EXCRETION- PLANT EXCRETION ANIMAL EXCRETION
Plant Excretion PLANTS DO NOT HAVE SPECIALIZED EXCRETORY ORGAN SO THEY TEMPORARILY STORE THE PRODUCTS IN CERTAIN PARTS OF THE BODY IN THE FORM OF INSOLUBLE CRYSTALS OR COLLOIDS.
Some of the excretory products are stored within some specific cells of the plant body permanently. But most of the excretory products are stored in the cells at first temporarily and then liberated from the plant body by the following processes:
Shedding of leaves- -- In deciduous plants excretory substances are transported and stored in the leaf cells before leaf fall and are eliminated with abscissionof the leaves. EXAMPLES: Hog palm, Silk cotton, Albizzia, Sirish, Simul etc.
Exfoliation of bark--- Mature tall trees store their excretory products in the bark. They get rid of it by exfoliation of the bark. EXAMPLES: Terminalia, Guava, Eucalyptus etc.
Shedding of fruits and seeds: In some matured fruits the excretory substances are citric acid, malic acid , tartaric acid etc. These waste products are stored in the seeds and the fruits. Ultimately, these are eliminated by the shedding or fall of fruits and seeds. EXAMPLES : Tamarind, Lemon, Apple etc.
Secretion of latex : Some plants get rid of their excretory products by the secretion of milky white thick fluid , called latex. EXAMPLE: Banyan , Calotropis , Pararubber , Cactus etc.
SECRETION OF GUMS : Some plants eliminate their excretory materials by the secretion of a sticky, fluid, called gum. EXAMPLE: Acacia, Albizzia , Odina ,etc.
SECRETION OF RESIN: Some plants liberate their excretory materials by the secretion of a transparent , yellowish sticky fluid, called resin . EXAMPLE: Pine, Shellac, Lacquer, etc.
BY DIFFUSION: Excretory materials like CO 2 is removed through stomata, lenticels by way of diffusion . Water soluble materials are leached out to the soil through leaves .
