Standard classification of poultry The exotic breeds of poultry were introduced in India by early Europeans According to standard classification , chickens are grouped into different classes 1. American Class 2. Mediterranean Class
3.English Class
American Class Includes breeds developed in North America . Known for dual-purpose utility (meat and eggs). Hardy and adaptable to various climates. Examples: Rhode Island Red, Plymouth Rock, Wyandotte.
American Class: Rhode Island Red Ex cellent egg-laying capabilities and meat production. They are hardy birds . They lay large brown eggs. Heavily built and high fecundity. Characterised by d istinctive deep red color.
American Class: Plymouth Rock Plymouth Rock is a dual-purpose breed valued for both its meat and egg production. They are known for their friendly temperament , hardiness , and attractive barred plumage. They weight 3-4 kgs .
American Class: Wyandotte Wyandotte is a versatile breed . A ppreciated for its good egg production and meat quality. They are hardy birds with a rose comb . C ome in various color varieties, including the popular silver-laced Wyandotte.
Mediterranean Class Originates from the Mediterranean region .
Known for excellent egg-laying abilities.
Typically smaller , more active birds. Examples : White Leghorn, Ancona , Minorca
Mediterranean Class: White Leghorn White Leghorn is a prolific egg layer known for producing a large number of white eggs. These chickens are active, hardy, and have a slim body with pure white feathers. Egg laying days are much more than any other class.
Mediterranean Class: Ancona Ancona is a Mediterranean breed known for its excellent egg-laying abilities. They have a distinctive mottled black and white plumage H ardy , and adapt well to various environments. Active forager s and mature quickly.
English Class Developed in the United Kingdom. Valued for meat productio n and size.
Generally calm and friendly temperament. Examples : Sussex, Orpington, Australorp .
English Class: Sussex An old and common breed of England Sussex is a dual-purpose breed . K nown for its good meat quality and egg production . They are friendly birds with a calm temperament . Occur in various color varieties, including the popular speckled Sussex.
English Class: Orpington Dual purpose breed. They have high fecundity and produce good amount meat. Eggs are bigger in size,may lay about 200 eggs per annum. Feathers are loosely arranged. Can not withstand extreme bad climatic conditions.
English Class: Australorp Australorp is an Australian breed derived from the Orpington. Known for its exceptional egg-laying capabilitie s. Beak is dark and glossy black feathers. The birds are good all round breeds. Can withstand bad weather.
