Linguistic Diversity

7,164 languages in use today. - Ethnologue

Multilingualism “the ability of societies, institutions, groups and individuals to engage, on a regular basis, with more than one language in their day-to-day lives ”

Multilingualism is a natural phenomenon.

Key points about multilingualism as a phenomenon: Because there are more languages in the world than countries Because languages are unevenly distributed

Key points about multilingualism as a phenomenon: Because we have immigrants who speak their first language and who need to acquire and speak the language of the host country

Key points about multilingualism as a phenomenon: Because we learn additional languages, like English, for better social and economic opportunities

Multilingualism is considered as a rule or a common phenomenon. What do you think prompts or drives people to become multilinguals?

What does a multilingual mean to you at this point?

Factors contributing to the visibility of multilingualism

1. Globalization

2. Transnational mobility of the population

3. Spread of new technologies

DIMENSIONS OF MULTILINGUALISM

It can be considered as an ability of an individual, or it can refer to the use of languages in society. Individual VS Social Dimension

Individual multilingualism is sometimes referred to as plurilingualism . Individual VS Social Dimension

Plurilingualism is the repertoire of varieties of language which many individuals use . Individual VS Social Dimension

Within individual multilingualism, there can be important differences in the experience of acquiring and using languages. Individual VS Social Dimension

Compound Multilingual : refers to people who develop three languages within a single context. Individual VS Social Dimension

Coordinate Bilingual : refers to people who learn three languages in different contexts. Individual VS Social Dimension

Sub-coordinate Bilingual : refers to people who learn a target languages using their native tongue. Individual VS Social Dimension

At the societal level, there is an important distinction between additive and subtractive multilingualism. Individual VS Social Dimension

Additive multilingualism : a language is added to the linguistic repertoire of the speaker while the first language continues to be developed. Individual VS Social Dimension

Subtractive multilingualism refers to situations in which a new language is learned and replaces the first language. Individual VS Social Dimension

The Proficiency VS Use Dimension of Multilingualism Once upon a time, the entire universe was shapeless. Until Pan Gu , a mighty giant, woke up from a deep sleep. As he woke, he pushed the sky and the earth apart. Pan Gu stood tall, and the sky rose high above him while the earth sank below. He continued to grow, causing the sky to stretch farther apart. Pan Gu's breath became the wind, his voice the thunder and his body the mountains. When he passed away, his body turned into the natural world around us.

How does the Myth of Iunu explain these? How does the Myth of Pan Gu explain these? Wind, Rain and Thunder

The air god Shu and the moisture goddess, Tefnut were formed from the spit of the powerful god, Atum. As Pan Gu grew, his breath became the wind and his voice the thunder. Wind, Rain and Thunder

Creation myths usually focus on this idea of order emerging from chaos. Let's read a couple of examples! A jumble of jigsaw pieces can look confusing and chaotic. But when put together into an image, chaos has been transformed into order!

How does the Myth of Iunu explain these? How does the Myth of Pan Gu explain these? The Earth and Sky

From the Shu and Tefnu came two deities: Geb, the god of earth, and Nut, the goddess of the sky. Shu stood between them, separating the earth and the sky. The earth and sky were close together before Pan Gu, a mighty giant, woke up and pushed them apart. The Earth and Sky

Aside from the idea of order arising out of chaos, what do these stories have in common? Let's think.

The Chinese Creation Myth of Pan Gu Once upon a time, the entire universe was shapeless. Until Pan Gu, a mighty giant, woke up from a deep sleep. How was order created out of chaos? Who created order?

Both are creation myths The earth and sky are created in both stories. The earth and sky are both split or separated. Here are some details that the myths we read have in common. Similarities

To review... And lastly: both creation myths show how order arrived from chaos! The Egyptian Myth of Iunu describes the creation of the world and different gods and goddesses. The Chinese Myth of Pan Gu features Pan Gu, who separated the earth and sky. A creation myth is an ancient story that reveals the origins of the world and our place in it, often featuring supernatural beings.

In your myth, you will explore the theme of order arising from chaos. Include the following in your story: Assignment: Write your own creation myth! Setting: Where does your creation myth take place? Is it in our solar system, an enchanted forest or somewhere completely different? Supernatural Being: Who is the special being in your myth? Are they a god, goddess or a fantastical creature with magical powers? Chaos: How is chaos depicted in your myth? Order: How does order emerge from chaos in your myth?
