Exponential Notation

Goal For Today……. Goal: Know what it means for a number to be raised to a power and how to represent the repeated multiplication symbol Know the reason for some bases to require parentheses Agenda: What is exponential notation? How do you determine the sign of the result?

There’s an easier way ! 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 5 x 3 = Multiplication is an easier way of adding the same number with itself multiple times!

What if you’re multiplying the same number with itself multiple times? 3 • 3 • 3 • 3 • 3 = Exponents are easier ways of multiplying the same number with itself multiple times!

Exponential Notation 3 5 =243 Base Exponent Answer

Exponential Notation In general, for an number x and any positive integer n Base Exponent

Notice the use of parentheses in #2,3, and 4 Do you know why?

When should you use parentheses? In cases where the base is either fractional or negative.

If n is a fixed positive integer, then…..

If n is a fixed positive integer, then….. Exponential Notation “ x raised to the nth power”

Exploration When a negative number is raised to an odd power, what is the sign of the result? When a negative number is raised to an even power, what is the sign of the result?

Wrap Up It’s over already : ( Why should we bother with e xponential notation? Why n ot just write out the multiplication? Exponential notation is used for recording scientific notation of very large or very small quantities. It is indispensable for the clear magnitude of a number.
