Topics Rill Method for Resin Extraction Lantana Eradication – CRS Method

Rill Method for Resin Extraction

Introduction Started in 1606 as a Novel stores Industries in America . America used resin for sealing the crack hole in the boat. India started Tapping work in 1896. Earlier European and Asian Countries where practiced “Lip & Cup” Method. Later an improved method commonly known as “Rill Method” standardized at Forest Research Institute , Dehradun to overcome the Lip & Cup Method. As per Rill Method the yield is 25% more per Tree per Season compared to other methods.

Different methods of Resin tapping 1.French cup & lip method 2.Rill method 3.Bore hole method Resin is obtained by tapping standing Pinus roxburghi . There are 3 different methods of tapping-

Bark Shaver Blaze frame Spray Bottle Marking Gauge Hammer cum Nail Puller Groove Cutter Collection Can Pot Scrapper cum groove cleaner Tools used for Rill Method

Preliminary Procedures. Tree Enumeration and Blocking. Harvesting Process of the Tree. Bark Shaving. Marking the position of Blaze & groove. Cutting the Central Grove. Fixing the Lip and Resin Pot. Freshening. Treating the Blaze with stimulant. Collection of Resin & Cleaning the Groove. Transportation of Collected Resin. Steps for Resin Tapping using Rill Method

Preliminary Procedure – Resource Collection and Data Collection of Pine Trees –Data analysis and report preparation – Area Selection and Environmental Study. Tree Enumeration – Procedure of counting the Tappable Trees. This work is repeated in every 05 years. Blocking- Blocking the Pine forest average 10,000 trees are kept in one compartment and each block divided into sub block ,one sub block is provided for one worker for tapping.

Bark Shaving – The loose and rough bark over a surface area about 45cm x 30cm above 15cm from the ground is removed with the bark shaver leaving 02mm thickness. Marking the Position of Blaze and Groove – The Blaze frame is vertically fixed on the bark shaved surface leaving 15cm above the ground and position of the blaze frame marked with the marking gauge. Cutting the Central Groove- A central groove 4mm deep and 7-9mm wide is made with the help of central groove cutter.

Mr.Aswani Kumar Sir ,RFO Saurabh Van Vihar ,Palampur demonstrating the rill method

Tapping rills calculation One week = 01 rill One month =04 rills One season(08 months) =32 rills After two years tapping the blaze reaches a height at which it is not possible to pull the freshening knife upwards. The blaze can be extended up to 04 years during the fifth year the height will be beyond the reach of the tapper. During the sixth year a new blaze is made at the bottom of the tree in the same manner as in the first year and continued this process upto 20 years

Fixing the Lip and Resin Pot – Lip should be fixed properly with nails & iron wires and ensure that proper flow of resin into the pot Freshening – Tapper should stand near the tree on one side of the blaze and hold the freshening knife at the lowest point of the central groove .Average width b/w consecutive rills is 6 to 7 mm and depth 2mm. Treating the Blaze with Stimulant - A chemical Stimulant used is a mixture of 1:1 ratio (20% dilute sulphuric acid and dilute nitric acid) should be sprayed on the freshly cut rill through sprayer .

Live Demonstration of Rill Method Tapping Tapping Season- start on 15 th March to 15 th October (07 months in colder localities ) and upto 15 th of November (08 months in Warmer localities )

Collection of Resin & Cleaning the Groove Remove resin pots from trees and thoroughly removed resin from the pot with the help of scrapper and collected in the collection can . Central Groove is cleaned after each collection with groove cleaner to facilitate smooth running of fresh resin to the pot.

Benefits of Rill Method Minimum Cutting that save heart wood from the damage and does not reduce the economic value of wood. Fast healing of blaze reduce the tapping cycle and increase tapping life of tree and forest. Provide safe from the fire and wind comparatively. It generates more employment due to 08 months tapping period and then transportation period .

Lantana eradication – Cut Root Stock Method (CRS)

Introduction Family – Verbenaceae . Local name – Panchphuli . Lantana Camara is native to the Tropical & Sub-Tropical regions of Central & South America . In India it was introduced in the early 18 th century as an ornamental plant in Coorg , Dehradun and Kolkata. Now 3.2 million hectares besides forests and fallow land is fully covered with this weed Lantana Camara

Lantana Infestation – a growing problem One of the world’s 10 worst invasive species – declared a problematic weed in about 60 countries Introduced in 1807 as an ornamental plant Infests 44% of forest area (about 3,00,000 sq. km.) In India About 2354.9 sq. km. area infested with Lantana Mostly found in subtropical forests below 1000m altitude In Himachal Pradesh

Challenges for Managing Seeds extremely viable – can remain dormant for 10s of years. Extremely versatile – adapts to climatic and edaphic conditions. No natural competition. Produces large amount of seeds every year. Has good coppicing ability. Ability for vegetative propagation from root stock, air layering.

Kudali (Hoe) Y- shaped Stick or Bamboo Gainti (Pickaxe) Tools used for CRS Method

Cut Root Stock Method (CRS) Involves cutting the main tap root of the Lantana plant below its coppicing zone . Bamboo Pole Pushing Root Side Digging up to 4 Inches ( Transition Zone ) Cut the Root Using K udali Turn the uprooted stock upside down

Live Demonstration of lantana eradication

Precautions before Removing Lantana Simultaneously clear all the small/new Lantana plants. Not to break the branches . Strike the base of the root by kudali as close as possible to avoid soil disturbance. Other desired species should not be damaged. If there is large birds perching trees, clear the Lantana periodically from such sites.

In three seasons: July-August October-November March-April Good Time : After First Summer Rain Showers in July-August The soil becomes soft Easier to cut the root stock Right Time to Remove Lantana

Demonstration of removal of Lantana by CRS method

Putting clumps of grass in the pits. Manual grass propagation. Preferably fast growing shrub/grass. Broadcasting seeds by dibbling or pellets. Planting of native species. Restoration of Lantana Cleared Areas

Uses of cleared lantana As fuelwood – dried Lantana can also be used to charcoal making Production of handmade furniture such as stools, chairs, mats etc. Use of dried leaves as mulching agent Biogas production

Benefits of CRS method Uprooting exactly below the transition zone (4 inches) eliminate the possibility of reproduction capacity. Minimum disturbance of soil. Minimum damage to other flora and flora species . About 60% less manual efforts compared to cutting/slashing.

Thank You…….
