Aquaculture fish farm: Aquaculture fish farm is the place where aquaculture or aquatic animals are cultured for commercial purposes . Meaning of fish farm facilities: Facilities of a fish farm is any kind of tool/material or anything else that help to increase the overall production of a fish farm in a more efficient way.
Site selection of ideal fish farm: Silt, loamy and fertile soil is suitable for farm pond. There should be a market nearby . Establish the farm near river, canal or big streams. The farm would be well facilitated for supplying necessary water throughout the year. The farm should have electricity facility for using pumps and other activities. There should be good transportation system.
Facilities Earthen ponds : Most commonly used for fry production, fry rearing or grow out fishes. Various size & depths are used . Most obvious feature of an aquaculture farm.
Hapas : Small cages made of fine mesh(e.g. mosquito netting) Usually installed in shallow areas Brood fish are stocked here & fry are collected regularly
Concrete ponds & raceways: When these types of construction are envisaged, intensive farming is to be applied. This means : High stocking densities (> 40 kg of fish per m3). Feeding with pre-formulated, high quality pelleted feeds. Use of artificial aeration or oxygenation. High water exchange rates (total exchange of 1 to 3 times per hour).
Cages: Used in intensive farming system. Don’t need of supplementary aeration. Ensure more security than raceways or concrete ponds.
Pumps Pumps are used for Pumping water into the ponds from surface water source or ground water. Also they are used for draining ponds for final harvesting . Two commonly used types of pumps are- Centrifugal pumps: Set horizontally along the outer perimeter of the fish pond. Turbine: Set vertically in the fish pond.
Seine Reels: It collects the fish from the water. Also called as “fish collecting device”. It sinks to the bottom of the pond.
Nets: Different types of net are used in fish farm. Also used for harvesting, separating, checking and other purposes. Automatic feeder: Also available in fish farm. Provide right amount of food. Controlled by remote.
Aeration devices: Also necessary for Recirculation aquaculture system (RAS) Provide adequate supply of oxygen Various types of aerator are used. Paddle wheel aerator Aspirator aerator Submersible aerator
