FACTORS

What are FACTORS?

FACTORS Factors are the numbers that are multiplied to get a product.

Example: Find the factors of 8.

The given number is 8. - Find two numbers that when multiplied together the product is 8.

8 can be written as product of two numbers in many ways: 8 = 1 × 8 8 = 2 × 4 8 = 4 × 2 8 = 8 × 1

8 = 1 × 8 8 = 2 × 4 8 = 4 × 2 8 = 8 × 1 Now, that you have all the numbers, list down the numbers once as factors of 8. 8 = 1, 2, 4, 8

1, 2, 4 and 8 are FACTORS of 8.

Factors of 28.

7 times 4 exactly and gives the product 28 . 7 x 4 = 28

4 times 7 gives PRODUCT 28 . 4 x 7 = 28

2 times 14 gives PRODUCT 28 . 2 x 14 = 28

14 times 2 gives PRODUCT 28 . 14 x 2 = 28

28 times 1 or 1 times 28 gives PRODUCT 28 . 28 x 1 = 28 1 x 28 = 28

28 x 1 = 28 1 x 28 = 28 14 x 2 = 28 2 x 14 = 28 7 x 4 = 28 4 x 7 = 28 1 28 2 14 4 7 FACTORS OF 28

FACTOR A factor of a number is an exact divisor of that number i.e. the factor leaves remainder 0 when it divides the number.

16 = 1, 2 , 4 , 8 , 16 FACTORS OF 16

16 = 1, 2 , 4 , 8 , 16 When you use these factors to divide to 16 the quotient will be exact and there will be no remainder.

16 ÷ 1 = 16 16 ÷ 2 = 8 16 ÷ 4 = 4 16 ÷ 8 = 2 16 ÷ 16 = 1 FACTORS OF 16

FACTOR PAIRS - the combination of two factors whose product is the given numbers.

14 x 2 = 28 In this given example, 14 and 2 are called factor pairs .

24 x 12 = 288 In this given example, 24 and 12 are called factor pairs .

COMMON FACTORS - the factors that are the same for all the given numbers.

Let us try to find the common factors of numbers 8, 16, and 24.

8 = 1,2,4,8 16 = 1,2,4,8,16 24 = 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24 First, list down all the factors of the given numbers.

8 = 1,2,4,8 16 = 1,2,4,8,16 24 = 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24 Now, that you have all the factors of the given numbers. Identify the factors that is common or the same in the three.

8 = 1,2,4,8 16 = 1,2,4,8, 16 24 = 1, 2, 3, 4 , 6, 8 , 12, 24 Now, that you have all the factors of the given numbers. Identify the factors that is common or the same in the three.

8 = 1,2,4,8 16 = 1,2,4,8, 16 24 = 1, 2, 3, 4 , 6, 8 , 12, 24 So, the common factors of 8,16, and 24 are 1, 2, 4 and 8.

COMMON FACTORS Two or more numbers may have more than one common factors.

Let us try this!!!

Give the factors of 24

Give the factors of 24 24 – 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24

Give the factors of 40

Give the factors of 40 40 – 1, 2, 4, 5, 8 , 10, 20, 40

Give the common factors of 24 and 40.

24 – 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24 40 – 1, 2, 4, 5, 8 , 10, 20, 40

24 – 1, 2, 3, 4 , 6, 8, 12, 24 40 – 1, 2, 4, 5, 8 , 10, 20, 40

24 – 1, 2, 3, 4 , 6, 8, 12, 24 40 – 1, 2, 4, 5, 8 , 10, 20, 40 COMMON FACTORS: 1, 2, 4, 8

POINTS TO REMEMBER 1 is a factor of every number. Every factor of a number is an exact divisor of that number. Every factor is less than or equal to the given number. Number of factors of a given number are finite.

THANK YOU!!!
