FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH DIAPER DERMATITIS AMONG CHILDREN AGED 0-24 MONTHS ATTENDING MAMA LUCY KIBAKI HOSPITAL, NAIROBI COUNTY, KENYA AMINA HUSSEIN MOHAMMED HND / PEADS /24001/…. SUPERVISORS Dr. Dr.

Introduction Diaper dermatitis is a common inflammatory condition in infants. Factors that contribute to diaper dermatitis include friction, hydration, and pH levels. The prevalence of diaper dermatitis varies in different countries, ranging from 15% to 43.8%. Poor households and cloth napkins are associated with higher rates of diaper dermatitis in African countries. Risk factors for diaper dermatitis include prolonged contact with irritants, infant age, and poor diaper cleansing practices. Erythema, erosions, and possible secondary infections characterize diaper dermatitis.

Problem Statement Diaper usage in Kenya has benefited from single-unit packs. Mothers in Nairobi's Eastland area struggle with tight budgets. Disposable diaper use is inconsistent, leading to prolonged exposure to wet diapers. Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital recorded an increase in diaper dermatitis cases. Severe diaper dermatitis requires hospital visits for treatment. The condition causes discomfort for infants and anxiety for parents.

Justification Study aims to determine prevalence and risk factors of diaper dermatitis. Findings will inform evidence-based recommendations for prevention strategies. Results will provide information on healthcare-seeking practices of caretakers. Will assist in policy formulation to reduce child morbidity due to diaper dermatitis. Understanding factors is crucial for sustainable interventions by government and stakeholders. Results will help improve planning and management of diaper problems.

OBJECTIVES Broad objective To identify factors associated with diaper dermatitis among children aged 0-24 months attending Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, Nairobi County, Kenya Specific Objectives To determine socio-demographic factors associated with diaper dermatitis among children aged 0-24 months attending Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital. To establish diaper-related factors associated with diaper dermatitis among children aged 0-24 months attending Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital. To identify diaper care practices associated with diaper dermatitis among children aged 0-24 months attending Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital

Methodology Study Design- descriptive cross-sectional design Study Area- Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, Nairobi County Study population- caregivers of children aged 0-24 months, -Approximately 196 caregivers with children aged 0-24 months seek services at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital per month

Inclusive/exclusive criteria Inclusion Criteria Children aged 0-24 months seeking services with a diagnosis of diaper dermatitis Exclusion Criteria Children with underlying skin conditions other than diaper dermatitis. Children with severe illnesses that preclude examination of the diaper area

Conti………….. Study Size Determination- Cochran (1977) formula. z = Normal SD, desired confidence interval = 1.96 p = Proportion of population with desired characteristics = 0.50 1-p = Proportion of population without desired characteristics = 1-0.50 d = Statistical level of significance = 0.05 n = 384 S ince the study population at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital has less than 10,000 N = total study population which is 196 Sample size = 130 caregivers with children aged 0-24 months

Sampling Technique Sampling technique Simple random sampling method for sample size. Equal chances for each participant. Serialization of patient list on day 1. First patient selected using random numbers Next patient included until sample size is achieved.
