Facts About High School Dropouts in America By Stand for Children

Introduction Stand for Children is a nonprofit organization founded nearly two decades ago with the mission to improve educational outcomes for ALL children, with a focus on those coming from poverty. The goal is to provide students with the skills they need to succeed beyond high school.

Dropouts Studies have shown that a young American without a high school diploma will have a difficult time earning a living wage. Poorer health and increased rates of incarceration are two additional issues non-graduates are likelier to face as compared with high school graduates. About 25 percent of the nation’s children, almost 1 million per year, leave high school without graduating. About 13 million American children live in poverty. Of these 13 million, only 10 percent will graduate from college.

Conclusion To improve those statistics, Stand for Children calls for more emphasis nationwide on early educational development, and advocates a wide range of strategies for keeping students engaged in learning. Parents and teachers can help by seeking specific improvements at schools, and by joining groups such as Stand for Children, which help elect education-minded candidates to state and district office where they can enact change through legislation and by raising funds for public schools.
