INTRODUCTION WHAT IS FALSE CEILING A false ceiling is a ceiling that is suspended from the main ceiling. The suspension is fixed to the walls , roof or beams of the superstructure. In simpler words, a false ceiling is a second ceiling created bellows the original. It gives a beautiful homogeneous appearance and smooth finish . PURPOSE It improves aesthetical appearance( form, color, treatment etc.) & proportions by managing room heights Hides electrical cabling & provides space for recessed lights Air-conditioning hides ducting & reduces the volume of room Ugly structural members like beams, etc. that usually spoil the ‘look’ of the room are concealed/ camouflaged . Provides insulation from heat . Acoustical improvement . soundproof rooms such as meeting rooms, auditoriums, etc , which require a quite environment . As a design element.
ADVANTAGE OF FALSE CEILING The various advantages of False Ceilings making them suitable for India : Durability Light Weight Portability Waterproof Fire Resistant Mild Acids and Alkali Resistant Unharmed by Fungus or Termites Easy Installations
Suspended or false ceiling Suspended ceilings always have some amount of space that is open (sometimes very little, sometimes very large) above the ceiling up to the structure above. This space above the suspended ceiling is called a plenum space . This is typically used as a space in which to locate HVAC ductwork, sprinkler pipes, recessed lighting fixtures, electrical conduit, and other systems components
FALSE CEILING the secondary ceiling which is created below the primary ceiling , that is , the main roof, is called false ceiling. USES: its used to conceal varied service lines- structural features , open pipes and wiring, and air conditioning ducts. it gives more options to use special lighting systems such as cove lighting, wall washers, floating effects and so on. false can be used to give thermal insulation for a given space. besides, it also creates an effective sonic system especially in auditoriums, cinema halls or recording studios . Very basic and economic cost of False Ceiling comes out to Rs . 80 – Rs 200 per sq. ft (square feet) . If you add some creative designs and material quality cost goes up. Designs that gel well with rest of the room. Plaster of Paris ( POP ) is being used since long time. Since last few years, Gypsum boards are used a lot. Previously simple wood was used, now good quality Ply is commonly used
TYPE OF FALSE CEILING Suspended ceilings are a type of architectural design element used in commercial and residential buildings . They are created using metal grid systems, which are suspended below the ceiling or roof deck using a series of wires. The grid is then filled in with ceiling tiles, which are primarily made from mineral fiber blends. Exposed Grid Exposed grid varieties are the most common type of suspended ceiling . They consist of long metal strips, called " mains," which are interconnected with shorter metal pieces known as "tees ." Together, the mains and tees form a grid system ,which are then filled with acoustical ceiling tiles. Concealed Grid Concealed grid systems use the acoustical tiles to hide the grid system from view . This creates a smooth, clean which is aesthetically pleasing. The tile used has a small groove built into it's perimeter , which slides over the mains and tees to cover them . This type is more expensive than an exposed system . It makes difficult for maintenance to access areas above the ceiling .
CONCEALED GRID CEILING Characteristics : Monolithic appearance Suspension from concrete soffit surface Ventilation ducts and other services accommodated in plenum . Easy to create bulk heads and change levels Access panels provide service access . Special load bearing ceilings available.
Installations : concealed grid ceiling .
. .
EXPOSED GRID CEILING Characteristics : Attractive pre-finished white surface Provides sound attenuation and absorption Electrical and other services accommodated in plenum Wide range of ceiling panels giving smooth , textured, patterned or perforated effects .
Installations : exposed grid ceiling .

FALSE CEILING TYPES : PROFILE 1.VISIBLE PROFILE CEILING. 2.CONCELED CEILING. 3.STRIP CEILING. 4.PANEL CEILING. Visible profile ceilings In this very common system . profiles are always visible . Ceiling tiles rest on the profiles and are in most cases made from a mineral material . The two standard module sizes are 300 mm and 312,5 mm . The most popular tiles in this type of ceiling are for ceiling grids of 600x600 mmand 600x1200 mm In this type of ceiling, luminaries will be mounted as an inlay
. .
Applications These ceiling types are usually used when electrical wiring, LANs and other technical installations are hidden behind the ceiling. Also in this application the ceiling should contribute to the acoustic environment . All Philips recessed luminaries are suitable for this kind of ceiling . STRIP CEILING 1.This ceiling system consists of main carriers on which metal strips are clicked . 2.They have various widths . 3 . Luminaries are usually mounted in line with the strips and perpendicular to the main carriers . 4 . In that case, a length profile mounted to the side of the luminaries is required, or suspension brackets at the head of the luminaries when the luminaries fits in exactly between two main carriers. Applications Areas like corridors, airports, etc.
PANEL CEILING SYSTEM The main carriers of these systems are usually placed at the main building modules . These are often 1200 or 1800 mm . Ceiling panels are mounted between the main carriers . In this type of ceiling, metal and mineral panels are used. If the distance between the main carriers does not fit with the luminaries length these luminaries can be lengthened so that they can be mounted between the main carriers . For profile A, the luminaries can be mounted as an inlay. Safety brackets can be delivered on request with the luminaries . When profile B is used, brackets are required and must be ordered separately. Also a 100% copy of the ceiling tile can be used with integrated luminaries . Applications Areas where removable partition walls are used and acoustic performance of high quality is required. In corridors each panel can span the total width (e.g. 1.8 m).
Polyvinyl chloride (P.V.C.) tiles Are commonly used floor & suspended ceiling finish They are small in size , usually 150mm, 225mm and 305mm The tiles are made of a composite of PVC and fiber Available in different colors, sizes, designs and patterns Are used in residences, offices, and commercial areas
METAL CEILING PANELS: The false ceiling is constructed with metal panels. Metals ceilings are suitable for a large Range of applications. The false ceiling is constructed with metal panels. Advantages of metal ceiling: They reduce overall cost, since they are easy to install and access. Hidden services can be easily accessed since the panels are removable. They are ideal for workspaces which require clean environments and services that require maintenance such as the machinery rooms, the AHU, etc. They have a monolithic look. They give the space a very modern look and blend well with glass.
Gypsum Board Is a panel made of gypsum plaster It is pressed between two thick sheets of paper. It is used to make interior walls and ceilings.
FIBERBOARD AND FIBER/MINERAL REINFORCED TILES: False ceiling can be made with fiber or mineral reinforced tiles and fiber board . Fiber reinforced tiles are strengthened with wood vegetable fiber , wood waste, reed paper and agricultural wastes. Mineral tiles are ceramics reinforced with natural stone, wood, vegetable fiber , bitumen and tars. This process increases the insulation capacity of the product .
PLASTER OF PARIS FALSE CEILING Plaster of Paris (POP) is commonly used for constructing false ceilings. Advantages of POP: A smooth, uniform finish. The surface can be recorded or painted. POP false ceiling are easy to construct and maintain. The ceilings are really light. Thickness- 10-15 mm Tile – 2.5 x 1.5 ft Rate: 80/- per sft . .
RATES: Rates of some of the available Gypsum board false ceilings based on the survey and Brouchers available are as follows: Plain gypsum board ceiling panel: 40/- per sft . Gypsum board poly Ceiling panel: 47/- per sft . Gypsum board PVC laminated Ceiling panel: 70/- per sft . Gypsum board Semi Perforated Ceiling panel: 48/- per sft . Gypsum board Fully Perforated Ceiling panel: 60/- per sft . without glass-wood. Gypsum board Fully Fissured Ceiling panel: 60/- per sft . Gypsum board Silt Ceiling panel: 64/- per sft . without glass-wood.
