INTRODUCTION Introduction Family planning is a vital component of Maternal and Child Health (MCH) and Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) programs. A Family Planning Clinic in the community is a health unit established to provide information, education, motivation, and services for regulating fertility, spacing childbirth, and improving reproductive health. It plays a major role in population control and improving the health of mothers, children, and the family as a whole.

Functions of Family Planning Clinic 1. Educational Functions Health education regarding advantages of small family norm. Awareness campaigns in the community (camps, group discussions, posters). Counseling sessions for eligible couples
Clinical/Service Functions Distribution of contraceptives (oral pills, condoms, emergency pills). Insertion of intrauterine devices (Cu-T). Providing injectable contraceptives. Guidance and referral for permanent methods (tubectomy, vasectomy). Antenatal and postnatal care related to family planning. Management of minor reproductive health problems
3. Preventive Functions Prevention of unwanted pregnancies. Prevention of unsafe abortions. Prevention and early detection of reproductive tract infections (RTIs) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Counseling for HIV/AIDS prevention
4. Supportive & Referral Functions Follow-up of clients using contraceptives. Management of complications (e.g., IUD side effects). Referral to higher centers for infertility services, sterilization, or complicated cases

Role of Community Health Nurse in Family Planning Clinic 1. Educator– Teach community about family planning, spacing, contraceptive methods, and benefits of small family. 2. Counselor– Provide counseling to couples regarding choice of contraceptives, fertility issues, and reproductive health. 3. Service Provider– Distribute pills, condoms, insert IUDs, assist in sterilization camps.
