A TRUE STORY

Mother Teresa
Agnes Gonxha Bejaxhiu was born to Albanian parents in Skopia in 1910. As a child she was kind and helped
everybody. At the age of 12 she decided to become a nun. Her father agreed but explained that life in a
monastery can be lonely but she didn’t mind.

When she was 18, she went to Ireland to become a nun. After few months there, the church sent her to
Calcutta to teach in St Mary’s High School. There she saw poverty and suffering and knew she had to do
something.

In 1950 she started a charity organization to feed the hungry and look after the sick. Although Calcutta was
the centre of her charity, she helped everywhere in the world, for example in Ethiopia or in the ruins of
Armenia’s earthquake and saved many lives.
She won the Nobel Prize in 1979 and asked the Nobel Organization not to have a dinner for her but use this
money to feed 400 poor children in India for a year. This showed how generous she was. In 1997 she
caught pneumonia and this brave woman died some time later.
