Explore the magic trick of friction Fantastic Force of Friction

Our learning Objectives Define friction as a force acting between surfaces or objects moving across each other by reading a scholarly article about friction Understand how friction force works and how it affects motion in real life by watching an illustrative video about friction in action

Learning Resources and Worksheets at Home Science Journey with Robo the Robot Document .

Friction is a force acting between surfaces and objects that move or trying to move across each other. All surfaces create friction even smooth ones create some friction. Friction force acts in an opposite direction to the direction of the moving object (direction of motion). Friction always slows moving object down , stopping it from slipping or sliding. Friction force produces heat and is measured in Newton. The rougher the surface is ,the more friction it produces on the moving object. Friction force isn’t always undesired. Some times it could be helpful Summary Motion Friction

Learning Check Friction is a ……….. .acting between moving objects. Only rough surfaces create friction ( ) Friction acts in the same direction as the moving object (Yes /No). Friction (slows down/speeds up) a moving object. Friction is always unwanted. ( ). Friction is measured in (Newton/Fahrenheit). force false false

How Friction Works Answer the following questions: Which statement isn’t true about friction force: a) Friction force generates heat. b) Friction force doesn’t depend on the roughness of a surface. c) Friction force is measured in Newton. Which statement is true about diagram (a) and (b) a) Surface a is rougher than surface b. b) Surface b is rougher than surface a. c) Surface a is as rough as surface b. Draw an arrow that shows the direction the block is moving a b

Alma finds it more difficult to push the shopping cart down the road than she does on the grocery shop floor because………. a) the gravity pulls the cart down harder on the road. b) the road surface creates more friction on the cart wheels. c) Alma enjoys shopping at the shop that she doesn’t pay attention to how hard she pushes the cart.

TUG OF WAR ICE SKIING Advantage or Disadvantage For each following real-life situation ,Decide whether the friction force identified is an advantage or disadvantage ,Explain. . BATHMAT Friction between children’s hands and the rope. Friction between the skis and the snow Friction between the bathmat and the feet of a standing person

Tug of War The friction between children’s hands and the rope is an advantage. Friction gives the children a stronger grip into the rope. ANSWER KEY

Skiing The friction between the snow and the skis is a disadvantage. Friction makes it difficult to ski smoothly on the snowy trails. ANSWER KEY

Bathmat The friction between the bathmat and the feet of a standing person is an advantage. Friction will not stop the standing person from slipping. ANSWER KEY

Calling out for Creativity Design a “Non-Slip” shoes for elderly Your design should include: What material is your shoes sole made of? Why? What pattern is your shoes sole treads? Why? The outer design of your shoes (color, shape, prints and texture. Draw your final design and label each part with its specific features. Write a paragraph (maximum of 5 sentences) to describe your design specification. Shoe Sole Shoe sole treads
