Feature Writing A.R.C.'s Egotistical Chronicle: Fascinating Life of a Teacher-Journalist Feature Writing
Let's meet the daredevil teacher in campus journalism. He didn't hesitate to accept the challenge to teach the subject because he has only one head, so he has only one mind. So there should be no doubt. Don't laugh! He really only has one head. If you think he has two heads...friend, stop thinking like that. You’re out of your mind, perhaps.
If you stare at him with your sarcastic gaze, he just looks like a housekeeper or address or location identifier to the delivery riders of Lazada , Shopee , J&T Express, and Food Panda, but he likes to play...play with words in writing but not with women's hearts. He believes in the journalist saying "We break news, not hearts."
When he turns his body slightly to the left and raise his right arm and hand above his head, and bite his lip at the same time, isn't it the level of handsomeness like Piolo Pascual , and the level of body built like John Cena !? It his dreams...
He is a graduate of DLSP, year 2016, with a degree of Bachelor in Secondary Education major in English, with Special Citation for Academic Achievement Award. Because he has a grade of 2.5 in Chemistry and two major English courses, he failed the cum laude application. But it's okay, it's still an award, there's still a medal! Who is the professor? Don't worry, the Chemistry teacher has retired from DLSP, the other prof is still here. He still idolizes that prof. But anyway, he doesn't want to worry about that nightmare anymore.
He is a Licensed driver…and… a Licensed Professional Teacher, of course, since 2016. He is proud of his rating of 77.00 because passing is 75.00, "What do I do with the excess of 75.00? The rating is not put at the end of the name, right? Just LPT, like Albert R. Castillo, LPT, not Albert R. Castillo, LPT, 77.00!” He just looks like an idiot and weird creature, but he is licensed, a license to drive, and of course a license to teach-it will expire next year! He is currently problematic of PRC’s required 45 CPD units!
He is currently affiliated at LSPU and PLSP as College Instructor, teaching Major and Minor English courses, Arts, and Social Science Courses. He loves his students at LSPU and PLSP, but he can't fall in love with them no matter how beautiful, smooth, and shiny their faces and skins are, his license might be revoked, it would violate the Magna Carta for Teachers! Also, he's engaged! Still going to cheat? We break news, don't we, not hearts...remember!
He is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree at LSPU San Pablo City Campus, taking up Master of Arts in Education major in English, with complete academic requirements. He is just waiting for the result of his comprehensive exam so he can start writing his thesis. Even if he sometimes falls asleep in class, his grades are still high.
"You will also experience sleepiness and fall asleep in the MA class when you stay overnight at school on Friday and then attend the MA class at 8am. That's reality in the life of teachers! However, don't forget to be a good and responsible student, like me of course! Sometimes I fall asleep in class, but I don't turn the classroom into a hotel room."
He is a former Feature and DevCom Editor of Bagong Sinag . “I took the EEC during that time. Three of us took the exam. Well...I was really forced to take the exam because of someone...Don't get to know her. I will not tell you that 'Tsang' forced me then. But I think, at that very moment, I am handsome sure (yes handsome sure, I'm a boy, so I should be handsome sure!) that I am not ready yet to take responsibility of Bagong Sinag and its members as EIC. I think I was only ranked 2 then, if I am not mistaken, because my score in the panel interview was low. I admitted to the panel that I can't be an EIC because first of all I'm still a beginner in campus journalism, I can only write poems and essays and then I'll be amazed to become an EIC. What am I, lucky!? I don't want the whole team to suffer because my skills and abilities are still lacking."
He also met his true friends in Bagong Sinag . Their group is called PAPAs. It consists of Albert Castillo, Aeious Plata, Aldrin Ajes , Aron Alimagno , Nikko Serida , and Santy Ilagan . Why PAPAS? Nothing. It’s just their trip. We have nothing more to do with it. They call each other "Papa" or " Paps ". But they are real men, just harden the pronunciation of "Papa" so that it doesn't have any other meaning.
He was an Awardee, 10th Place, DevCom Writing-English, RHEPC 2014. His first race at RHEPC, and that's it, he is even lucky! Worth buying the Pilot Frixion Ball Erasable Gel Pen at Expressions Ultimart for 79.75 pesos! It is also worth it to eat noodles in the town of Lucban , Quezon! Take note! He still has a sore ingrown during the three-day Presscon . Maybe that's his lucky charm.
Another award he received was 7th Place, Feature Writing-Filipino, RHEPC 2015. And once again compete in RHEPC! It's a shame that he didn't qualify for the LHEPC. He did his best but he thinks his best was not good enough. Are you also wondering what style was made by those who entered the Top 5? It sucks, isn't it? You're so confident in yourself that your article was already the best, but it's only ranked 7th! It's really thought provoking. Anyway, in his desire to get to LHEPC, he prayed and asked God that the two LHEPC qualifiers (the top 4 and 5) be busy during the scheduled Presscon or get sick, so that ATPAST can call him and compete at LHEPC. However, the good Lord doesn't listen to bad requests...
He is also an Awardee, Rank 10, DLSP Outstanding Student Leader, 2015. It's good that he accumulates the certificates he received in seminars and competitions. That's why he ranked 10th in DOSL. So, don't throw away your certificates. Yes, it's just a paper, usually not scented paper or just a plain bond paper, but that's important for college students and when you apply for a job. The medals are not requested during the application. That's just for display.
Another award received! Rank 7, DLSP Outstanding Student Leader, 2016. Hey! His rank increased, from rank 10 to rank 7! How many or how thick are the certificates that he accumulated that year??? But he is very happy because he will graduate with such an award.
He is the Former School Paper Adviser of Giornale dei Bambini, The Official School Publication of Scuola dei Bambini for 3 consecutive years. "It's not easy to become SPA... there is no salary addition, there is only an addition to the work load. There is no charge for O.T., there is only Thank You. But it's fulfilling because I can expose myself to my passion. It even developed my knowledge and skills not just in writing but also in terms of leading a team. Even though I don't really do newspaper layouts, I used to just watch Bagong Sinag when someone was doing layouts and I didn't really know InDesign and Photoshop, so I had no choice but to study and do it as SPA.”
“When I was still a student, I had that fear of leading Bagong Sinag , but I found out that I can lead a school publication. That time I realized to myself that I am already confident to lead a team because I have the necessary leadership skills. P.S.: Allow me to brag...The bambini newspaper ranked high in DSPC during my years of being its adviser. And there are students/staff who have experienced competing in the RSPC after so long years. But it's not just because of my guidance to them, I believe they are great!"
2018 . Out of over 20 school divisions in CALABARZON, their team made it to the Top 5. Their newsletter was produced within less than two hours. He had to write three feature articles on the spot after the interview (to get facts). "I was just relaxed. I sat next to the window so I could breathe fresh air. I used to have a Jollibee bag with me, so that's what I was going to inhale. My brain is in good condition, so I finished the three feature articles in less than an hour (because it was still being laid out by my team mate."
Another award! 4th Place, Editorial Writing-Filipino, SPA Category, 2019 CALABARZON Campus Journalism Roadshow. How ironic, he's a creative writer but won in editorial writing, which is kind of technical. The editorial is not his line, he might just be sued for libel if he dares to write it. But as he said, "As journalists, let's not be afraid to try things we've never been able to do. We will not improve, we will not be better, and we will not be able to explore the possibilities if we will not take risks.” But what hurts to him was, during that competition, he won in editorial writing but lost in feature and science writing. What happened? Is this a sign that he will change category? Well, we don't know...
Just a prim and proper and a not so handsome man who loves coffee, just brewed coffee: with coffee granules, muscovado sugar instead of raw sugar to prevent diabetes, and hot water in a cup or glass of course! He is the person who does not believe in the saying "Think outside the box"; you will know why ... And this is the egotistical chronicle behind the fascinating life of a journalist and a teacher of ALBERT R. CASTILLO, LPT, MAED, MX3, CD, DVD, with Moringa , Ginger Turmeric, and Gingko Biloba .
Feature
FEATURE is NOT Essay. Feature is the art of telling the truth, and the art of telling stories. Feature articles are typically longer than standard news that deals with detail and background based on extensive research.
FEATURES VS. NEWS Features - Any length, may or may not be timely, maybe written in any form and style News - Straight news story, timely
Distinct Characteristics of feature
Title is the secret of a feature article . It is a creative creative writing. Play around the ideas and words; humor is a big factor . No pyramid to follow. Just follow what you like; which you think the reader will also like what you write. The feature has no technical structure or formula, you can write freely . It has a unique angle that hooks the readers. You need to bring out the angle in your article that will make your readers smile or be happy.
It is multidimensional. Use vivid, descriptive words that appeal to the eight senses. It may inform, instruct, or advise, but its primary purpose is to entertain. It may be of any length .
It may or may not be timely. It is timeless. It may be written in any form or any style. It usually uses the novelty lead rather than the summary lead. Although the writer applies his imagination to the facts, the feature story is not fiction. It is based on facts.
Topics for Feature Stories Using a cliché, a feature article, like an essay, may be on any topic under the sun from A to Z. For campus writing, the following broad topics are suggested to feature editors, for their feature sections:
Personalities . It is also called character sketch. It may be about a student leader, a successful alumnus, a teacher, a school staff member, or even about an industrious janitor. The student to be featured should not always ne the campus doll, nor the dashing Romeo of the class, but the achiever, the builder, or the innovator. A community member who has raised the biggest squash or the fattest hog in his backyard deserves to be played up.
In writing a character sketch, the emphasis should be on the person, what he says and thinks, and what he does for development, qualities/traits that you want to see in the person, unusual things about the person. Tips: Use strong visual words. Lasting image of the person. Use words related to the five senses (multidimensional). Create the right angle (What is not yet known by the people about the person?). Describe the physical features, inner personality, social backgrounds, and principles.
Experience and Adventure . Suppose a group of Science students had attended a national Science Camp. Each one of them has an interesting story to relate---the workshop seminar, the feasibility studies, the field trips, and others. This may be summarized as one big story or may be written in separate featurettes .
Description . There are many significant events and special festivities in the school and in the community worth writing about. But in his description, the writer should as much as possible be factual and original. He should use simple and concrete words that are easily understood by the layman or Mr. Average Reader.
Narratives . These are interesting stories to relate, especially historical ones. An old person in the community may be asked to narrate how the district got its name or how in the olden days people fished or washed clothes in a polluted estero nearby.
Developmental Feature Articles . There are other subjects of feature stories that interest readers. Some of these are the latest fads and fashions, book, movie and play reviews, and the “How to” articles. The last one explains a process or a method like “How to Raise Mushrooms.” It tells, for example how to conserve energy, how to fight pollution, or how to raise poultry in the backyard.
What To Do & How To Do Articles . There are also “What to” articles. There are those that tell what to do during earthquake, a typhoon, an emergency, or the like. Usually, these kinds of feature articles are accompanied by pictures or illustrations.
Writing the Introduction
Unlike straight news story, a feature article may begin in any form and in any style. This depends on the topic or purpose of the writer. Most features, however, may be introduced by any of the following: Rhetorical Question Startling Statement Narrative Opening/Anecdote with multidimensional descriptions Quoted Remarks An Old Maxim, an Aphorism, or a Salawikain History or Background of the Subject
Writing the Conclusion
Again, as important as the lead, is the ending. The last word or words impress the reader as strongly as the opening sentences. It may any of the following : A summary of the whole article An announcement of the main point A question left in the reader’s mind Suggested results or significance A forecast or prophecy A repetition of the introduction A repetition of a sentence or slogan, or a reference to the title An appropriate quotation

He/she is a keen observer, knows how to look for features from beneath the surface of everyday event. He/she has various interests and intellectual curiosity. He/she has the ability to write features interestingly. He/she has cupboards of descriptive words and everyday idioms He/she has a skill to weave words into interesting sentences and paragraphs.
