Feeding of goats

Why nutrition is important ?? To obtain and utilize surplus or unusable feedstuffs and convert them to desirable product such as meat, milk, fiber and work. Maintenance, health, production and reproduction.

Results of poor nutrition Poor or decrease productivity. Poor consumption rate. Lower birth weight of kid. Difficult births during parturition. More infectious as well as nutritional and metabolic deficiency diseases. Lower immunity level.

Feeding system of goats Tethering Extensive or open or free-range system Semi-intensive system Intensive system or closed.

Tethering Animal are tied with a rope 3-5 m length which permitted to goat to browse to a limited area. Change the location whenever necessary so that goat may get sufficient grass to meet the requirements.

Extensive/open/free-range system Small marginal farmers and landless laborers take own animal walking long some long distance in search of food and water. Goat found opportunity to browse for about 8-9 hrs per day which take care maintenance but rate of growth is slow down.

Browsing habit of goats Goats are the natural browser and have the unique ability to select plants when they are at their most nutritious state Browse (plant leaves and twigs) and forbs, herbs contain high level of protein, phosphorus during growing season than ordinary pasture. Goats which browser have less problem with parasitic infestations.

Semi-intensive system Combination of both extensive or intensive. Grazing 4-6 hrs and then kept in stall where they offer rough gage and concentrate mixture depending up on their availability. Performance of goat depends up on the quality and quantity feed made available through limited browsing and supplementing feeds. Level of nutrition is better then goat finding in extensive system.

Intensive system or closed Keeping goats in stall and feeding them in cultivated fodder (fresh and conserved) and concentrate to meet their requirement. Goat get optimum nutrition. Performance of goat is good (growth and milk yield). Doe mature at early age. Parasitic infection is low. Reproductive performance is better. Twining and dressing percentage is high.

Goat of the scientific goat nutrition Maximum conception rate Minimize embryo and fetal mortality Birth of viable kids Rapid growth High milk production Minimize feeding cost
