Geographical Location and Land Area

Located In The Northwestern Coast Of Luzon With An Area Of 12,840.19 Km². Bordered by the West Philippine Sea (west), Cagayan Valley and Cordillera Administrative Region (east), Central Luzon (south), Bangui Bay (north).

Dry season: November to April. Wet season: May to October. Cooler months from December to February; H ottest months are April and May. Coastal and sloping terrain prone to typhoons and hot during dry months. Ilocano food features salty and preserved flavors due to proximity to the sea and use of fermented fish ( asin ). 7

Brief History and Origin Myth Giant Angalo molded the land of Ilocos into mountains and valleys. From his spit emerged the first man and woman who started the Ilocano people. Spanish colonialists introduced Roman Catholicism, which mingled with indigenous beliefs about spirits and faith healers. 8

Culture and Traditions ​ Belief in supernatural beings: katawtaw -an (souls of infants), karkarma (souls of the living), al-alia (spirit doubles). Post-funeral rituals, offerings, and signs believed to connect the living and the dead. Traditional clothing: everyday wear includes short pants and skirts; rainy season headdresses made from labig leaves; hair styles differ by age and occasion. Strong family ties with father as head and mother managing discipline and finances. Marriage customs include parental approval, dowry, formal announcements ( panagpudno ), and wedding arrangements ( palalian or ringpas ). Value thriftiness — often seen as " kuripot " but actually wise spenders. 9

Economy and Traits Farmers, fishermen, and traders shaped by rugged terrain and distance from trade centers. Produce fruits, vegetables, and preserved foods. Characterized by resilience, thriftiness, hardworking nature, and family respect. 10 Ilocano Literary and Recreational Traditions Epic poem Biag ni Lam-ang is a famous Ilocano story. Traditional game kukudisi involving a stick and ground markings.

Conclusion Region I’s unique geography and history fostered a rich culture and strong traditions. The Ilocanos are known for their resilience, family values, and cultural pride. 11
