Origin   Its origin lies in the myth of the heroic deeds of the Greek soldier Filipides , who in the year 490 BC. He died of fatigue after running about 37 miles from Marathon to Athens to announce victory over the Persian army.

FACT In fact the way Filipides ran from Athens to Sparta to ask for reinforcements would be about 225 miles. Still, the myth gained much popularity about what really happened, and in honor of this competition with the name "Marathon", it was included in the 1896 Athens games.

In the three first modern Olympics the marathon was a distance of about 42 kilometers. But in 1908 the Games were held in London. The starting line was located next to a window at Windsor Castle so that half of the royal family could contemplate it. The arrival was placed in front of the royal palace, in the White City Stadium, where he hoped the other half of the family. The distance was 42,195 miles, since that is the standard measure of the marathon.
