Film Pre -Production By: Andras Pinter

Pre-Production Film workers consider Pre-Production as the most important stage in film production. Time must be spared in order to use it more for post production. T he producer is responsible for assembling the production team. The Director is the one who will have overall control, therefore most of the pre production is dogged around him. The Director should be the first and most important that the producer hires in order to start, however the cast and crew also determines if the film will be successful and well financed. The quality of the script is also an essential step for the success of a film.

Pre- Production Steps

Make a production Schedule: Have dates planned for all the shooting, make sure to leave time for Editing and Cutting. Visualize your Projects look: We have to think about what colors, mood and tone the script should have. Crew Up: The more job the people get, the more time we will have for directing and the performance needed for the actors Personnel involved in Pre-Production: 1)Production Manager 2)Production Accountant 3)Location Scout 4)Transport Manager 5)Production runners and assistants 6) Unit and location Managers

Location Scouting : Finding a proper location is KEY for your storyboards and film. You may need to tailor your storyboards to your location or vice-versa Make sure to have a proper lighting Casting: Make a form of paper for people to fill out( personal details necessary) Bad actors are the downfall of films, especially student made short films. Make sure to have good, satisfying actors who you trust Production Design: 1) What is the films theme? 2) What kind of props go with the set? 3) What kind of location should the scenes have? 4) What is the mood throughout the production time?

Prepare costumes, Props, set Dressing : Equipment necessary for the success of the film is essential A prop, formally known as (theatrical) property, is an object used on stage or on screen by actors during a performance or screen production. Make a plan for each location: Mark Camera Positions Crew positioning Make a storyboard: A visual representation of each scene in your film, your storyboards can illustrate character placement, blocking, lighting positions, focal length, and other notes. Make a shooting Schedule Rehearse: Holding table reads and rehearsals weeks before shooting will ensure that when the camera is ready to the roll, your cast will be giving the performance your movie truly needs. This extra time before the shoot also allows the cast to develop a genuine chemistry that will not go unnoticed by your audience.

The Director`s Role

The Director A film director controls a film's artistic and dramatic aspects and visualizes the screenplay (or script) while guiding the technical crew and actors in the fulfillment of that vision. The director has a key role in choosing the cast members, production design, and the creative aspects of filmmaking . To be a successful Director you need crucial skills such as: Have exceptional artistic vision and creative skills, have unerring commitment have a deep passion for filmmaking, be a strong and confident leader make decisions delegate and collaborate with others, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills inspire and motivate the team, have an extensive understanding of the entire filmmaking process, from both technical and creative points of view work intensively for long hours, pay attention to detail remain calm and think clearly under great pressure, have great self-belief be determined to succeed At all stages, Directors are responsible for motivating the team to produce the best possible results. Directors must also always be aware of the constraints of the film's budget and schedule and manage the expectations of the film's financiers .

Assembling the Crew and Cast The people the director works with, both actors and crew who will make things work behind the scenes are important for the films success. The cinematographer, or director of photography, helps to translate the vision to the film, scene by scene, planning shots and supervising camera operators. The actors will bring the story to life, Casting will be based on such factors, such as availability, and whether or not the actor is suitable for the work or not. Production designer is the person responsible for the overall visual look of the production. Production designers have a key creative role in the creation of motion pictures and television.

Filming and Post Production After months, or maybe even years, the final script is set and the film goes to pre-production. When shooting begins, you will still need to communicate your vision about the film with the actors and crew members, maybe even improvise if trouble comes by. Post Production includes tasks such as the editing of raw footage to cut scenes, insert transition effects, working with voice and sound actors, and dubbing, to name a few of the many pre-production tasks. Post-production is the third and final step in film creation. It follows the pre-production and production phases .
