uniformitarianism

Uniformitarianism, in  geology , the doctrine suggesting that  Earth’s  geologic processes acted in the same manner and with essentially the same intensity in the past as they do in the present and that such uniformity is sufficient to account for all geologic change. This principle is fundamental to geologic thinking and underlies the whole development of the  science  of geology. BACKGROUND HISTORY:-

THEORIES OF GEOLOGIC CHANGE:-

Uniformitarianism  concept developed in the late 1700s. This concept suggests that catastrophic processes were not responsible for the landforms that existed on the Earth's surface. This idea was diametrically opposed to the ideas of that time period which were based on a biblical interpretation of the history of the Earth. The theory of uniformitarianism suggested a gradual geologic process. i.e erosion, deposition, mountain building. CONCEPT OF UNIFORMITARIANISM:-

James Hutton, in 1785. This concept was further modified and developed by Jhon Playfair, in 1802. Then Sir Charles Lyell popularized this concept of uniformitarianism by giving suitable place of it in his famous book ‘ Principles of Geology’.

DEFINITIONS:- OR

PRINCIPLE OF UNIFORMITARIANISM:-

LAW OF UNIFORMITARIANISM:- The geologic processes that happen on the earth today happened the same way in the past ( volcanoes, mountain building etc. ) The earth slowly and constantly changing.

Uniformitarianism competed for acceptance with catastrophism and eventually displaced it. Hutton was the first person to recognize that we could understand much about how geologic features (such as valleys, sedimentary rocks, and mountains) came to be by observing the events of the present day. Uniformitarianism gave us a tool to interpret the geologic past. In fact, geologists sometimes summarize the concept in the phrase: The present is the key to the past. The concept is applied to all types of geologic processes. For example, rivers erode valleys and build deltas gradually. SIGNIFICANCE OF UNIFORMITARIANISM:-

UNDERSANDING UNIFORMITARIANISM ON EARTH SURFACE:-

CONCLUSSION:- This investigation into uniformitarianism attempted to reveal that although it played a useful role in the Historical context in which it originated, today the Concept of it is an anachronism. Modern geologists interpret the idea in a slightly Different way than it was originally conceived, but it Is still an indispensable concept in interpreting the Geologic history of our planet.
