Business Proposal
By: Shawna Reeves

Introduction
Business Proposal
In today’s day and age visuals rule the world. Canva has transformed the way businesses and individuals create stunning
designs and visuals. We have emerged as one of the leading online platforms that empowers users to design anything they
want, unleashing their creativity, bringing their visions to life, and publishing from anywhere in the world. By providing an
extensive library of design templates, instinctive interface, and a vast number of customizable elements, we have simplified
ways to create high quality professional visuals. We are redefining design and communication with our innovative approach
and dedication to user-friendliness.
This business proposal outlines an opportunity for new product offerings that aim to increase Canva's capabilities and meet
our users' changing needs. We advocate using artificial intelligence to create a design assistant that will transform the creative
process by offering users intelligent suggestions, automated design generation, and tailored recommendations. This ground-
breaking innovation will help users save time and effort while also improving the quality of their designs, so securing Canva's
place as the industry leader in graphic design platforms.

EXTERNAL & INTERNAL
BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT
Business Proposal
At Canva, our mission is to empower everyone in the world to design
anything and publish anywhere. Some of our values include leading by
example and setting big goals. (Canva, 2024) Canva has dramatically
transformed the way people and businesses design and create incredible
content and visuals that correlate with their audience. Canva mainly
supports Business-to-Business (B2B) that use Canva for Branding,
Ads/Marketing, Social Media campaigns etc, as well as Business-to-
Consumer (B2C) markets who utilize Canva for creative presentations,
personal creations, social media, flyers, resumes and such. Canva operates
globally, which means our platform is made available to customers
worldwide! Our management team leads the way with a wide range of
industry experience and knowledge which includes Entrepreneurship,
Graphic Design backgrounds, as well as Tech. Information regarding our
Board of Directors is currently not made available to the public which is
standard for private companies.

Canva has become a pioneer in the Technology & Graphic Design Industry by providing a platform for creating visuals and creative content.
Canva operates using Graphic design Software. The Graphic design and Technology industries are continuing to advance and expand at a swift
pace, due to the increasingly high demand for high quality creative content and visuals fuelled by the rise of social media. The Tech Industry in
particular, has seen an increase in advancements of AI and more. This will continue to allow for expansion between design platforms like Canva
with technology and AI reshaping the industry.
The potential for threats with new entrants into the Graphic Design and Technology market space could be considered high on one hand but on
the other hand there are also limiting factors that can lower that potential threat. At Canva we operate through a software platform, which initially
demands a higher investment but also has low recurring costs to keep it going. This is one way that new entrants can take advantage and break
into the market. We also run as a digital platform, so it is safe to say that makes it easier to scale quicker, which is a plus for new entrants because
they can gain market shares at a faster pace. On the other hand, when it comes to our Intellectual property, we have acquired copyrights and
patents that can create barriers to entry for new entrants that could stunt their ability to scale fast. Also, even though the upfront investment may
not be high for new entrants into the industry, they may need a substantial amount of capital to compete with us when it comes to customer
acquisition, marketing, and product development.

Overall, although we have established a strong brand presence, network,
and systems in place, we will need to continue being innovative and making
sure to pour back into the platform by investing in new and improved
methods and trends in-order-to sustain our competitive advantage. (Check
Out Patent Portfolio for Canva Key Stats & Figure, 2024)
The threat of substitutes for Canva’s products and services is steadily
increasing due to several factors. Some users still enjoy traditional design
model options, for example Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, which are still
top choices amongst some consumers. Another factor that should be
considered are other platforms or open-source options that provide features
that are like ours with little to no cost involved.
The graphic design and technology markets continue to change over time,
and Canva has fortunately been at the head of many of these everchanging
developments. Some of the major trends include AI powered designs, where
users can now search and suggest design ideas that are based on their own
desires and preferences. Another trend is Virtual Reality experiences that
allows users to create immersive experiences in design. (French, 2024)

At Canva, we have a wide and diverse customer base that extends across numerous
demographics and industries. Our customer demographics accommodate small businesses,
corporations and Individuals. Our Individual customers age ranges from 18 to 34 yrs. old, with
ages 25 to 34 making up the largest segment of users which is just over 30% of all Canva users
(Steven, 2024). Female users make up just over 60% and almost 40% are male users (Steven,
2024)
The Socio-economic characteristics of our individual customers is widespread, ranging from
professionals, teachers, students, freelancers, and business owners (e.g., Canva, 2024). Our
corporations’ sizes range from larger corporations to small startup companies, and they expand
over multiple industries including Social media, Marketing & Advertising, Schools & Education,
Design, Retail, Nonprofits, Real Estate, Computer Software, and Religious Institutions (Steven,
2024). Canva is also utilized by nearly 90% of Fortune 500 companies (Fry, 2021). Our users stem
from all around the globe, to include Australia the birthplace of Canva, Europe, South America,
Asia, and North America. Canva is popular in multiple locations, but receives a lot of our traffic is
from here in the U.S. Our popularity can be attributed to the user-friendly interface and plethora
of design options and tools (Walsh, 2024).
STRATEGIC
SCANNING

One of the secrets to our success is our ability to meet a variety of
customer’s needs, especially those related to visual content &
communication. Our users are satisfied in the following important ways:
Accessibility: Our drag-and-drop feature makes it simple for individuals with
various levels of design expertise to produce graphics that still look
professional. Time-Efficiency: We drastically cut down on the amount of time it
takes to produce designs by offering pre-designed templates, stock photos,
and fonts options. Cost-effectiveness: Our platform is affordable for
individuals and small enterprises, with a free option that provides a good
number of functions. Collaboration: Our platform is perfect for teams and
businesses because of our team features, which lets users work together on
projects together. Customization: Our customers can alter designs to fit their
unique needs for their marketing or branding needs.

We are in a competitive market with a fair share of indirect and direct competitors. Our potential
customers are currently purchasing their products and services from Direct Competitors like:
Illustrator, Photoshop, Piktochart, Visme, and Figma. Indirect Competitors include Keynote,
PowerPoint, Google Slides, and Stock photo sites. Our top 3 competitors are Figma which is a
cloud- based design tool platform, Adobe Creative Cloud, which is a versatile suite of design tools,
and Visme which is most similar to Canva and it offers a variety of creative visual content tools. Like
many competitors there are both strengths and weaknesses present.
COMPETITION
Here are a few strengths and weaknesses of our top 3 competitors:
Strengths of Adobe Creative Cloud: A lot of features, robust tools, and industry standard
Weaknesses: Expensive, difficult learning curve, little cloud-based collaboration
Figma Strengths: Real-time editing, robust collaboration features, and design prototyping
Weaknesses: Small template library; less intuitive for beginner users
Visme Strengths: Easy-to-use UI, reasonably priced
Weaknesses: Fewer features than Canva and less potent than Adobe Creative Cloud (Wong, 2024)

Integrate a design assistant powered by AI inside
the Canva app. Features: generates images (text
to image, ex: Adobe Firefly) that will also include a
library of different themes and style options that
can get users creative juices flowing.
Adding a “smart assistant” which will focus on
helping users by suggesting improvements
Solution One
Offer an advance feature that gives users an
option to insert their own requirements or needs
for their design (ex. Style preference, target
market, goals etc). This option would also be AI
generated and produce a complete customized
design. This feature will meet the needs of our
advanced customers who know exactly what they
want and want to save time etc which will allow
them to be more productive and focus on other
tasks.

Solutions
Recently, after doing some research I developed
two possible solutions that could complement
each other and ultimately improve our processes
and products here at Canva. Here are a few
proposed solutions:

CONCLUSION
By investing in the development of an AI-powered design “smart assistant”, Canva will further solidify its position
as the leading platform for graphic design. This innovative solution will not only enhance the user experience but
also drive significant business growth. By catering to the evolving needs of our customers, we can attract new
users, increase customer satisfaction, and maintain our competitive edge in the rapidly growing design industry.
The implementation of this AI-powered design assistant represents a strategic step towards a future where
creativity and technology seamlessly converge, empowering individuals and businesses to achieve their design
goals with unprecedented ease and efficiency.
