FIRE SAFETY
Role of Fire Marshals

Fire Safety
Objectives:
On completion of this course of instruction you will:
Understand the reasons why fires start, how to
prevent them and the types and uses of Fire
Extinguishers
Know the functions and duties of a Fire Marshal
Know the evacuation plan and Assembly Points
for your areas of responsibility

Fire Safety
Is Fire the only danger in office
buildings?
No, but it is one that can have
devastating effects!

Fire Safety
Fires in the workplace cost insurance companies
and businesses $ Millions each year
As well as lost production there are job losses and
associated injuries and sometimes deaths
Under the HSE&S regulations we have a legal duty
to look after the health and safety of ourselves,
colleagues and anyone visiting the workplace
This means that we should all help to prevent fires
starting and know what to do if we are involved in
fire incidents

How Do Fires Start?
Statistics show that50%of workplace fires are started
deliberately
50% are commonly caused by faults in or misuse of
electrical appliances, faults in electrical wiring, careless
smokers and misuse of tools that have a naked flame,
such as a cutting torch
Fire can cause serious physical injury, fire
can also kill

Burns
Fire causes extreme heat which can cause burns to
the skin. Burns vary in severity
Minor Burns
Major Burns
Deep Burns
All burns cause loss of body fluids
Breathing hot air can burn lung tissues

Fire Safety
Smoke
Smoke is responsible for more deaths than heat and
flame together
Toxic Fumes
Suffocation
Property Damage

The Fire Triangle
Fire depends on three things
Heat
Oxygen
Fuel
FUEL

Fire Safety
Comparison of the oxygen
consumption:
Humans need 21% oxygen to live
Fire needs 16% oxygen to burn
A fire starts when the amount of oxygen is 12%

Fire Safety
Three different physical states of fuel exist
everywhere
Liquid Gas Solid

Fire Safety
Sources of fire in workplaces
Sparks, Hot projectiles

Fire Safety

Fire Safety
How do we extinguish a fire?
What are the main principles ?
Only try to extinguish a fire if you have
been trained to do so
Never allow a fire to be in between
youself and your escape route

Fire Fighting
If you discover a fire, you need to act calmly and quickly
If it is a small fire you may be able to put it out yourself
Raise the alarm
Ensure you have a clear escape route
Leave the area, close doors, go to your assembly point
Do not return to your workplace to collect personal belongings
Do not re-enter the building for any reason
Check mustering status of the persons under your responsible area

Fire Extinguishers
There are three ways to put out a fire:
Smothering-Remove the oxygen
Starvation-Remove the fuel
Cooling-Remove the heat
Fire extinguishers can be used to extinguish fires
They can be recognised by their colour
You must use the correct one
It can be dangerous to use the wrong one
Only use a fire extinguisher if you have been
trained to do so

Fire Extinguishers
Recognition:
By full body colour
and a coloured bar
Water
Foam
CO2
Powder
The fire extinguishers located in our work place are
mainlyCO2 and Powder

Fire Precautions
All the ingredients for a fire are around us every day
If we are fire conscious we can reduce the risks by:
Identifying fire hazards
Removing the hazards and minimising the risks
Knowing how to use fire extinguishers
Knowing the correct extinguisher to use on a fire
Carrying out the correct procedures in an
emergency

Fire Precautions
Smoking
Only where allowed
Never near flammable
materials
Never near flammable
liquids or gases
Never when using an
aerosol
All No Smoking areas
should be marked
Keep the Workplace
Clean and Tidy
Evacuation
Mark Escape Routes
Fire exits and routes
Fire doors

Fire Precautions
Maintaining the
Escape Routes
Keep fire exits and routes
clear at all times
Keep internal fire doors
closed at all times
Regularly check all
external fire doors to
ensure they open easily
from the inside
Fire Alarms and
Equipment
Fire alarms checked
regularly to ensure they
work
Fire alarms must be able
to be heard everywhere
Special arrangements for
the deaf or in noisy areas
Fire Fighting Equipment
tested regularly to ensure
that it works

Fire Precautions
Procedures
All companies must have an evacuation plan. This should give
people clear instructions what to do in the event of fire.
To ensure that:
Everyone leaves the building as quickly as possible
No-one is hurt
Frequent Drills are carried out to test the procedures
Fire Marshals are appointed and trained
Proper planning for evacuation can save lives and reduce damage

Fire Marshals
General Functions
Each appointed area Fire Marshal require to make
themselves available to all personnel, to provide
consultation and advice related to fire prevention.
Daily:
Check fire fighting equipment
Inspect evacuation routes for obstructions
Inspect for poor housekeeping
Report any incident affecting the above to HSE
Department

Importance of checking exits

Fire Marshals
Awareness
All Fire Marshals shall be conversant with the following:
Location and operation of the fire alarm call points
Means of escape in event of a fire alarm sounding including
primary and secondary escape routes and muster points
Evacuation procedure to clear their area
Location and operation of the various fire extinguishers
Designated assembly points ( Primary and Secondary) in event of
evacuation
Awareness of any dangerous materials and any special
arrangements for their safe control
If you are to be away from their place of work to advise line
management and other Fire Marshals
Office escape plans posted in each floor

Fire Marshals
EMERGENCY ESCAPE ROUTES

Fire Marshals

Fire Marshals
Personnel Induction Training

The assembly point and what to do when assembled
Location, function of fire extinguishers (only trained
personnel should use a fire extinguisher )

Fire Marshals
Personnel Induction Training

your supervisor

Fire Marshals
Evacuation of Disabled Persons
Fire Marshals are to be informed by either the individual
concerned or line management of any person who has a
disablement or handicap affecting their ability to evacuate.
When so informed, the Fire Marshall will make arrangements
for specified colleagues, working nearby to assist that person

Aiders or other key personnel, who must be kept free to deal
with the emergency
Fire Marshals are required to participate in safety audits/tours
within their designated areas and to provide constructive
comments on fire prevention, precautions and evacuation
arrangements

Fire Marshals
Action in the event of the fire alarm sounding
