Fish Farming Fish farming is raising fish commercially in tanks or in fish ponds . It is an old practice that is fun, productive and at the same time, rewarding. This type of venture utilizes fish farms as a sustainable food production system. Fish farming - tanks Fish farming – fish pond
Steps to Plan Your Pond To prepare your dream pond, here are the steps to get you started: Select a low spot in your backyard where water would naturally collect. Include in the design the plan on how you will collect the fish when they become ready for harvest. Seal your pond. For small ponds, line the bottoms with a waterproof plastic liner. Spread the liner over the desired shape of the pond. Fill the pond with water. Do this carefully to minimize erosion. Let the water flow down a plastic sheet and other surfaces so that the flow of water does not dig through the soil or clay mix. Remove the plastic once this process is done.
Fish That Can Be Raised Tilapia – one of the many fish species cultivated in the Philippines and ranks second as the most cultivated fish in the world next to carp and ahead of salmon. It is very popular and its production continues to increase. Tilapia
Fish That Can Be Raised A. House or Cage The size of the pond depends upon the number of fish you want to raise. There must be two or three matured fishes per square meter of water surface. The depth of the pond should be 1 meter with water and not less than 0.75 meter deep. Accessible water should be available throughout the year. It should be exposed to the sunlight to hasten the growth of small aquatic plants. Water level depth of 1 to 1.5 meter should be maintained.

Fish That Can Be Raised Tilapia: B. Food or Diet Tilapias feed on mainly plant matters like plankton, filamentous algae and other vegetable matters. This is one of the reasons why tilapia does not accumulate pollutants and other toxins in its body. Feeding should be done every morning. Supplement feeds like rice bran, bread crumbs, earth worms and other termites may be given at an initial rate of 5% of the total body weight of tilapia. Add more fertilizer to maintain natural fish food. Vegetables like water spinach or kangkong and taro or gabi can be used to provide shade and serve as natural fish food.
Fish That Can Be Raised Tilapia: C. Maintenance The pond should be exposed to the sunlight to hasten the growth of small aquatic plants known as algae or lumot that serves as food for tilapia. The and should be flood-free specially during the rainy season. Fence the pond with fine-mesh bamboo so that no fish will escape. Apply fertilizer one week before stocking if the pond is newly constructed. Fertilize the pond once a month for good production of algae. Remove excess fingerlings after the third month of stocking, and retain six fingerlings per square meter. In harvesting tilapias, use a deep or lift net. The net should be lowered down to the bottom of the pond. Spread a small amount of feed on the water above the net. Immediately lift the net as fast as possible to prevent the tilapia from escaping. Restock the pond after harvesting.
Fish That Can Be Raised Carp – one of the most commonly farmed fish. It is also one of the most cultured ornamental fish out of the many ornamental fish species. Some example of this fish species are the common carp or European carp, Indian carp and Chinese carp. European carp Indian carp Chinese carp
Fish That Can Be Raised Carp: A. House or Cage A nursery pond must be constructed first for cap larvae. The common size of the nursery pond is 5 x 10 meter with depth of 0.5 meter. When the carp is cultured and reaches its marketable size, transfer it to a rearing pond. The size of a rearing pond should be 15 x 20 meters and 1.5 to 2 meters deep. Clean both ponds first before filling with water.

Fish That Can Be Raised Carp: B. Food or Diet Carps usually eat floating plants and algae, mosquitoes and bugs near the water’s surface. They also love to find tadpoles and small fish. At the bottom of the water, they go around to sift through the mud for various aquatic organisms like worms, freshwater shrimps and snails; and ingest some mud, bacteria and fungi. Their digestive tracts have evolved to digest a wide variety of food. They try to eat anything edible that fits their mouth.
Fish That Can Be Raised Carp: C. Maintenance Carps are hatched from eggs. They can grow to a weight of about 13kgs. They can also thrive on fresh water and grow well in a hot and humid climate where they can lay eggs as many as four times a year. They lay eggs once during cool months or where the climate is moderate. Carps lay eggs differently. A variety of materials is used to collect the eggs: tree branches, plants and fiber mats. The fingerlings stay in the nursery pond for another month before they are transferred to rearing ponds. You can earn money by breeding brood stock and selling this to other fish farmers and collectors of ornamental fish species for their aquarium.
Refresh / Fish Farming: Fish farming is a productive, rewarding and fun practice. Tilapia ranks second as the most-cultivated fish in the world. Carp is one of the commonly farmed and cultured fish species. Thank you for listening.
