The leaders of those times had to pick the type of economy India would be and also outline the economic planning as well. This is where Five Year plan was born. The government set up a planning commission would be responsible for framing and implementing the Five -Year Plans of the country

HISTORY Jawaharlal Nehru, presented the first five- year plan. The five- year plan was launched in 1951. M ainly focussed on the development of primary sector. The five -year plans were laid to rest by the Narendra Modi led government in 2015. The 12 th five- year plan is considered as the last five- year plan in India. Niti Aayog has replaced the planning commission in the Modi - Cabinet and launched three-year action plans from April 1, 2017, onwards.

Second five- year plan made for the duration of 1956-1961. Its main focus was on the industrial development . Health related objectives Create awareness on environmental hygiene. Family planning and other supporting programs. Control of communicable diseases. Establishment of institutional facilities to serve people.
Third five –year plan was made for the duration of 1961-1966. main target of this plan was to make the economy independent . Health related objectives Improvement of environmental sanitation and safe water supply. Control of communicable diseases. Maternal and child health services. Institutional facilities for training of medical and health personnel.
Fourth five-year plan Its duration was from 1969 to 1974. two main objectives of this plan - growth with stability and achievement of self- reliance. Health related objectives To eradicate communicable diseases. To establish primary health centres in community blocks. Implementation of family planning programme. Expand medical and nursing education training of paramedical personnel.
Fifth five-year plan duration was 1974-1978. This plan focussed on Garibi - Hatao , employment, justice, agricultural production, and defence. Health related objectives Elimination of poverty. Realization and attainment of self- reliance .
Sixth five-year plan duration was from 1980 -1985. The basic objective of this plan was economic liberalization. Health related objectives Increasing the accessibility of health services to rural people. Development of referral services by removal of deficiencies in district hospitals. Qualitative improvement in education and training of health personnel. Eradication of communicable diseases.
Seventh five-year plan duration was from 1985- 1990. The objectives of this plan include the establishment of self -sufficient economy, opportunities for productive employment, and up-gradation of technology. Health related objectives Community participation and intersectoral co-ordination. rural health programmes. Special efforts on urban health services. school health services and mental and dental health services to ensure comprehensive coverage.
Eighth five-year plan Its duration was from 1992-1997. priority was given to the development of human resources - employment, education, and public health. Health related objectives Reducing birth rate from 29.9% to 26%. Reduce infant mortality rate from 80% to 70%. Coverage of health services provided by various sectors.eg., welfare, human resource development, nutrition etc. Operationalization of subcentres, primary health centres, community health centres. Health for all paradigm.
Ninth five-year plan duration was from 1997- 2002. main focus of this plan was “growth with social justice and equality”. Health related objectives Establish functional referral linkages. Local recruitment of doctors. Provide adequate diagnostics, consumables and drugs. Strengthen emergency services .
Tenth five-year plan duration was from 2002 -2007. This plan aimed to double the per capita income of India in the next 10 years. Health related objectives Re-organisation and restructuring of the existing govt. health care system with referral linkages. Skill upgradation of all health care providers. Strengthening and sustaining civil registration and sample registration system. Improving content and quality of education for health professionals, research and development.
Eleventh five- year plan duration was from 2007 -2012. main theme was “rapid and more inclusive growth”. Health related objectives Reducing maternal mortality ratio to 1 per 1000 live births. reducing infant mortality rate to 28 per 1000 live births. Reducing total fertility rate to 2.1%. Improving medical, paramedical, nursing, dental education. Re-orienting AYUSH education and utilization . Reducing malnutrition among children of age group 0-3 years to half. Reducing anaemia among women and girls by 50%.
Twelfth five-year plan duration was from 2012 -2017. main theme is “faster, more inclusive and sustainable growth. Health related objectives Reduction of infant mortality rate to 25 per 1000 live births. Reduction of maternal mortality rate to 100 per 100,000 live births. prevention and reduction of anaemia among women aged 15- 49 years to 28%. Raising child ratio in the 0-6year age group from 914- 950. Prevention and reduction of burden of communicable and non- communicable diseases.
