MSc. in Textile Engineering
Textile printing is the process of applying color
to fabric in definite patterns or designs. In
properly printed fabrics the color is bonded with
the fiber, so as to resist washing.
Advanced Garment Printing
Advancement in technology has paved the way
for a much better garment printing. The art of
direct printing on garment is simplified by the
technology every day. You can already choose
and create your own design for t-shirts and other
garments regardless of how complex the design
is. In this assignment I discuses some advanced
garment printing given below.

Foil is actually a heat press application, but can be
applied on press for certain affects. Foil adheres to
plastisolinks or a clear foil adhesive. Available in silver,
gold, bronze, red, and blue. There are some awesome
iridescent foils affects available too -just check with
your sales rep.[1]To get the gold /silver stamp, a foil
layer is affixed to a certain material by a heating
process. It isn’t too complicated of a process and
getting the files ready are quite similar to uv-spot
printing. See my guide on preparing files for print as a
reference and talk with your printer about how to supply
the files. Foil printing normally requires vector images
and/or outlined fonts of what you want to have
stamped.

In foil printing, the quality of the adhesive is very
important. Generally it is made up of acrylic co-polymer
with water as diluents. Cheaper qualities show very poor
stretch, loss of softness and smoothness after five
washes and look very unlike the original print. The foil
should not stick to cured inks under pressure. Normally
a matting agent is added to avoid sticking.[1]
In the second method, printing is done on the foil paper
first, and then foil is pressed on the fabric with hot steel
roller or iron.
Foil paper is called the stamping foil paper. Actually it is
not the paper but the detachable foil film on the plastic
base. Generally it is PET film of 15 micron thickness,
available in widths of 640 or 1500mm

So, print your fabric by foil printing process and produce various attractive designs.
There are many types of foil colors. But some of them
are most common in printing process.
Common Foil color list in close-up detail are given
below.
15
There are two primary types of foil
stamping machines.
The first type is manualand the second is
pneumatic(air powered).
Manual foil stampers are ideal for low to
medium volume jobs and
The pneumatic is ideal for medium to high-
volume jobs.
16
There are various kinds of foil paper available for use in foil
stamping. These are:
17
MetallicFoil Paper: Metallic foil paper has a metal like sheen
and gives a shiny and shimmering look to the foil stamped
design. Such foil paper is available in different metal shades
such as gold, silver, bronze, and copper just to name a few.
Gloss Pigment Foil Paper: This type of foil does not have a
metallic look but has a very highglossy finish. Using this type of
foil gives a painted look to the finished printing. Gloss foil is
also available in many different colors
Matte Pigment Foil Paper: The same colors that are
available in gloss foil paper are also available in a
dull finish as opposed to a glossy finish, thus the
name matte foil paper. A solid white foil paper also
comes under the classification of matte foils.
Holographic Foil Paper: A multidimensional image
made photographically with the use of lasers and
special optics is called a hologram. This kind of foil
gives a very special, moving effect to the foil designs.
18
1) Flat Foil Stamping
The flat stamp technology is t most popular
relatively simple and much more cost effective than
the other types of foil stamping.
2) Sculpted Foil Stamping (Multi-Level Foil Stamping)
This type of foil stamping gives excellent finished
results but is far more costly than regular flat foil
stamping.
19
3) Vertical Foil Stamping
This kind of foil stamping technology is best used for
cylindrical parts, but only to a maximum of 90
degrees of the outer perimeter of such parts.
4) Peripheral Foil Stamping
Peripheral foil stamping is the technique used to
apply foil heat transfers onto the 360º outer
perimeter of various materials.
20
Hot foil is economical but very slow.
The types of graphics that can be applied are
usually limited to text and bold images.
Hot foil is not usable with heat-sensitive
substrates such as polyethylene, vinyl, or
shrink film.
21
22
Cold foil ismoreconvenient and cost-
effective than hot stamping.
Cold foil printing needs smooth surface
substrates for excellent image quality.
Uses:household consumables, cigarette
cartons, wine labels, and cosmetic packaging
etc
23
24
From the above discussion we know about the
foil printing. Nowadays it is one of the most
popular printing process. It gives good and
unique design. That’s why its demand is
increasing day by day.
