INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
Waste is the residues produced by the activities of human. It is the same product which is been used
by man but becomes waste due to its loss of value (McDougall et al., 2001). Waste, according to

Environmental pollution can be summarized as any substance or material present in the environment
that has the ability to cause damage to human health or the environment (Briggs, 2003). Solid waste
pollution has economical, sociological, environmental (Rahardyan, et al., 2003; Kupchik and Franz,
2012) and public health effects (Gaby, 1981; Rushton, 2003; Hamer, 2003). The pollution may be
caused by lack or inadequate management and/or inappropriate means of waste disposal (LaGrega et
al., 2010).
Nigeria is reported to be the largest nation in West Africa and Africa's most populous country.
Bordered by Benin, Cameroon, Chad, Niger and the Atlantic Ocean, it is located at Latitude 4o to
14o N and longitude of 2o to 15oE, covering a total area of 923,768 square Km (World Atlas, 2014).
With a population of 123.9million, 43% of the people reside in the cities. Lagos is the second
fastest–growing city in Africa and the highest populated city in Nigeria with a total of 5.2 million
people (Abiodun, 1997). Due to the urbanization, there has been an influx of people in the city and
problems such as lack of houses, influx of automobile, and environmental problems surfaced (Aina,
1989; Oketola and Osibanjo, 2009). Inappropriate disposal of waste from households poses one of
the biggest problems associated with the high population in Lagos. Poor road access, inappropriate
disposal, lack of proper management of infrastructure, and inadequate management of solid waste
