•Globalization came from the word “Globalize” which refers to
the emergence of international network of economic systems
(Martinez Jr., et.al, 2018).
•The word "globalization" is usually attributed to Theodore
Levitt, a professor at Harvard Business School who
introduced the term in 1983.
•Globalization is a wide and confused term. There is not a
single definition of globalization.

“Globalization can thus be defined as the intensification of worldwide social relations which link
distant localities in such a way that local happenings are shaped by events occurring many miles
away and vice versa.” –Anthony Giddens, Director of the London School of Economics
Below are the five influential definitions of globalization:

“Globalization may be thought of as a process (or set of processes) which embodies a
transformation in the spatial organization of social relations …. David Held, Professor of Political
Science at the London School of Economics
3
“The concept of globalization reflects the sense of an immense enlargement of world
communication, as well as of the horizon of a world market, both of which seem far more tangible
and immediate than in earlier stages of modernity.”- Fredric Jameson,Professor of Literature at
Duke University
“Globalization as a concept refers both to the compression of the world and the intensification of
consciousness of the world as a whole.-Roland Robertson, Professor of Sociology at the
University of Pittsburgh

5
“Globalization compresses the time and space aspects of social relations.-James Mittelman,
Professor of International Relations at American University

trends …between world’s rich and
poor countries and between human
beings …..-Goldstein (2009)
“Globalization is process of
interaction and integration among
the people…of different nations,.”

WHY STUDY
GLOBALIZATION?
We study Globalization because:
1.To develop critical thinking, problem solving and
awareness of the world.
2.To cure Parochialism and extreme nationalism.
3.To know more about ourselves by studying others
(Know thyself).
4.To cure Xenocentrism and Ethnocentrism.
5.To become a global citizens.

We study Globalization because:
1.We study the outside world because it is a cure to Parochialism (outlook that is
limited to one’s immediate community). A Parochial person is close-minded
person.
2.We study the world because it allows us to develop critical thinking, problem
solving and awareness of the world.
3.We study the world because it can teach us more about yourself. Knowing about
other countries culture, politics, and economy allows us to compare our society
with others.
4.It helps us cure Xenocentrism (belief that one’s culture is INFERIOR to others)
and prevents Ethnocentrism (belief that one’s culture is SUPERIOR to others).
5.We study the world because of Global Citizens (someone who is aware and
understands the outer world). We study the world because we interact in it. In
this way, whatever decision others make affect us directly or indirectly.

Advantages, and
Disadvantages of

THE ADVANTAGES OF GLOBALIZATION
1.It can eliminate poverty through the interaction of countries.
2.There is faster diffusion of productive ideas and easier transfer of
technology from developed countries to the less developed countries.
3.Global education where students not only interact with the classroom but
rather toward being a global citizen.
4.Prices generally tend to be cheaper, due to competition.
5.Communication becomes faster as the world moves through the Internet;
6.Foreign investments may increase with new knowledge and information
about a certain country being available.
7.More employment opportunities are being offered to jobless workers.

THE DISADVANTAGES OF GLOBALIZATION
1.Poor countries may become entirely dependent on richer and more
powerful nations.
2.Local traditions and production of pure native products will become
obsolete as more imported and innovative products are available upon
consumption.
3. Infringement of sovereignty may happen because countries are being
pressured into adapting global economic and trade policies.
4.Environment degradation may occur as enterprises try to utilize at
maximum different natural resources of the country.
