FORCE Field Analysis by, Chandrak Trivedi Melbin Sunny Roshan Swar Team Teaching Strategy and Techniques 1
OVERVIEW 2 What is Force Field Analysis? Force Field Analysis Model Procedures Analysis
What is Force Field Analysis? Force-field analysis is an influential development in the field of social science. It provides a framework for looking at the factors (forces) that influence a situation. According to Kurt Lewin , “An issue is held in balance by the interaction of two opposing sets of force – those seeking to promote change (driving forces) and those attempting to maintain the status quo (restraining forces )”. 3
FORCE FIELD ANALYSIS MODEL Model built on this idea that forces – person, habit, customs, and attitude – both drive and restrain change . U sed at any level to visualize the forces that may work in favor and against change issue initiatives . The “tug-of-war” between forces around a given issue. 4
FORCE FIELD ANALYSIS MODEL The Force field model is a method to: Investigate the balance of power involved in an issue. Identify the most important players (stakeholders) and target groups for campaign on the issue. Identify opponents and allies. Identify how to influence each target group. Purpose To decide whether to go ahead with the change ; To increase your chances of success, by strengthening the forces supporting change and weakening those against it. 5
PROCEDURE Step 1: Describe/Define the current situation. Step 2: Defining the Change Objective. Step 3: list all the forces driving change toward the desired situation. Step 4: List all the force resisting change toward the desired situation. Step 5: Discuss and interrogate all of the forces. Step 6: Allocate a score to each of the forces using a numerical scale. Step 7: Discuss how the change can be affected. 6

TIP It's important to identify as many of the factors that will influence the change as you can. Where appropriate, involve other people, such as team members or experts in your organization . Carry out a Force Field Analysis at the very beginning of a project with a diverse team because it will significantly increase the likelihood of a successful outcome. 8
CONCLUSION Force Field Analysis is a useful decision-making technique. It helps you make a decision by analysing the forces for and against a change, and it helps you communicate the reasoning behind your decision. It helps us to anticipate all the forces involved whether logical, emotional and political . 9
