(Aquilaria
agallocha)

SFS:18-20

•The capital city of
Tripura, “AGARTALA”
gains its name from

part- Infected wood
Uses- Essential Oil in Perfume
industries
The small wood flakes: used in
bakhoor for fragrance the room
in Arab

Priority given to:
•Different inoculation
technique, harvesting ,
extraction of agar and grading
•Process of extraction,
marketing and uses of agar
•Agar extraction Policy, 2019

Stage 1
•tree attacked by a stem
borer (Zeuzera conderta)
Stage II
•tunnel made by the borer
makes a path for the entry
of a fungus (Phialophora
parasitica)
Stage III
•plant produce secondary
metabolite in form of oil as a
response
Mechanism of Oil
Formation:

Artificial Inoculation technique:
•ArtificialInoculation(Fungal
culture)
•Physical Inoculation (Nail
insertion)
•Cowdungputatthebaseoftree
to attract the borer

Harvesting & Extraction: Harvestable age: ≥ 7
yrs
Collection Chamber
Oil collected after passing through condenser pipes
Condenser
Steam with vapour of agarwood oil
Boiler
Boiling of Agar wood chips in water

Grading:
•Not standardised by the
govt.
•Local trader use the term 1st,
2nd, 3rd grade depending
on color and consistency of
oil
•The 1st and 2nd are sold in
oil form
•The low graded oil are used
in incense stick preparation
•Naturally infected wood-
better quality oil
•Artificially infected usually
gives darker color oil of low
quality

Marketing of Agar Oil:
•Infected woods from Tripura - transported to Hujai market of Assam
•Further exported to different countries
•Price based on the colour and quantum of infection
•The demand is more in China and Arabian countries
New Agar Extraction Policy, 2019:
•Agar is placed under Appendix-2 of CITES having ENDANGERED status
•Agar trade requires “Export and Import Certificate” from CITES
•First state to formulate Policy on Agar
•Inventory of Agar tree availability in Both Forest and private plantation in Tripura
•Registration of private Agar plants
•Extraction of Agarwood from registered matured trees
•Establishment of Agar oil extraction unit
•Export of oil or related products
•Monitoring and evaluation of sustainable harvesting

Conclusion:
•Poverty ridden States, highly dependent on Forest causing biotic pressure
and forest degradation
•Agar serves a promising source of employment for local people
•To improvise existing agar sector
•Increase private agar plantation
•Proper source of planting material
•Improve market structure
