FORMS OF ENERGY BERNADETTE T. MANALO Discussant

Objectives Describe the forms of energy and their uses. Explain the history of energy consumption and the present global energy use. Describe the uses of fossil fuels and its impact on the environment. Plan for the future.

POTENTIAL ENERGY Energy that is stored. Potential energy is highest when the object is at a higher point. The more mass something has the greater its potential energy.

ENERGY The ability to do work or cause change Energy is neither created nor destroyed; it can only be changed from one form to another. Either potential or kinetic

KINETIC ENERGY The energy of motion. The faster the motion the greater the kinetic energy.

KINETIC VS. POTENTIAL At the point of maximum potential energy, the car has the minimum kinetic energy.

CHEMICAL ENERGY This is the energy of matter due to its chemical composition. Food, water, batteries, fossil fuels, metals, acid, oxygen

MECHANICAL ENERGY Energy of a body in motion (kinetic energy), or a body capable of producing motion (potential energy).

NUCLEAR ENERGY Energy stored in the nucleus of an atom Released by fission, the splitting of nuclei of heavy atoms Released by fusion-the combining of nuclei of light atoms .

RADIANT ENERGY The physical energy resulting from electromagnetic radiation, usually observed as it radiates from a source into the surrounding environment.

THERMAL ENERGY Energy of matter due to its constantly moving molecules. It is ordinarily perceived as heat.

SOUND This is the energy of vibrating matter.

ELECTRICAL ENERGY Energy that comes from the transfer or flow of electrons from one material to another.

HISTORY OF ENERGY CONSUMPTION and PRESENT GLOBAL ENERGY USE

DAILY CONSUMPTION OF ENERGY PER CAPITA (E. Cook, 1971) .

FOSSIL FUELS AND USES

FOSSIL FUELS Non- r enewable energy as they take millions of years to get renewed. They are formed from the prehistoric remains of plants and animals . The three forms of fossil fuels are natural gas, coal and oil/ petroleum.

NATURAL GAS It is used in air conditioning, cooking appliances and heat homes and establishments, heating water etc. It also provides electricity and is used in industries. It also produces paints, fertilisers , plastics and dyes.

CRUDE OIL/PETROLEUM A lso called “black gold” It is used in the generation of electricity, used in transportation as fuel for automobiles and jets. The by-product of oil is used to produce chemicals, plastics, lubricants, tars, waxes, medicines

COAL u sed in the generation of electricity. used in electrical utilities, and products like dyes, aspirins, soap, fibers, plastics and solvents have coal or coal by-product. It is used in the steel industry, pharmaceutical industry, cement manufacture, manufacturing of paper.
