THE OUTBREAK OF THE REVOLUTION

Introduction Louis XVI had to increase taxes for some reason. In France of the Old Regime , the monarch was not able to levy taxes individually or just like that. He had to call a meeting of the Estates General which would pass his wish to levy taxes. The Estates General was a political body to which the three estates sent their representatives.

On one such meeting on 5 th of may 1789 , King called the assembly of the Estates Generals to pass proposal for levying taxes. The first and the second estate which represented 300 representatives each . They were supposed to sit rows facing each other on two sides. The third Estate which represented 600 members , had to stand back and that too the peasants, women and artisans were not allowed.
