Let’s Study

OUR STOMACH & PROPER FOOD

Objectives
Students will be able to know :
1.What is Stomach ?
2.How does stomach works ?
3.How does food get digested in stomach ?
4.What is proper food ?
5.Why do we need Proper Food?

OUR STOMACH
The stomach is a muscular hollow organ. It takes in food from the
esophagus (gullet or food pipe), mixes it, breaks it down, and then passes
it on to the small intestine in small portions. The entire digestive system
is made up of one muscular tube extending from the mouth to the anus.

Dr. William Beaumont
William Beaumont (November 21, 1785 – April 25, 1853) was a surgeon in the U.S.
Army who became known as the "Father of Gastric Physiology" following his research
on human digestion.

Let’s Read a Poem
Story of Martin
Who became the basic source
of research about our stomach

Let’s know more about
Alexis St. Martin

Who is this Martin ?
Let’s READ more about him and how do we get to know about
our stomach and the whole process of digestion of food in our
body.

LET’S SEE

Alexis St. Martin
Alexis Bidagan St. Martin (April 8, 1802[a] – June 24, 1880) was a Canadian voyageur
who is known for his part in experiments on digestion in humans, conducted on him
by the American Army physician William Beaumont between
1822 and 1833. St. Martin was shot in a near-fatal accident in
1822. His wound did not heal fully, leaving an opening into
his stomach. Studies of St. Martin's stomach led to greater
understanding of the stomach, gastric juices and the
processes of digestion.

Read the story :
At the age of 18 When Martin was shot Dr.
Beaumont treated him. After some time the wound
was healed but a big hole remained in his stomach
with a loose flap of skin.
Dr. Beaumont got an opportunity to experiment.
He took some liquid out of his stomach and
started experimenting to find out how does
digestion take place in stomach .

Dr. Beaumont’s Experiments
At 8.30am he put twenty tiny pieces of
boiled fish in 10 mm of juice. He kept the
glass at the same temperature as that of our
stomach - about 30C. When he checked at
2pm he found that the pieces of fish had
dissolved.
He then tried this experiment with
different food items.
He also did comparative experiments and
found amazing facts.

His Observations

Dr. Beaumont’s Conclusions :
Our stomach churns the food to digest it. The juices present in
stomach are acidic which helps in digesting the food. The doctor
also found that food did not digest properly when the person is
sad. It means mood and fitness of a person also affects the
digestion.
If a person has not eaten anything or if the food is not digested
properly the person may feel acidity/ acidic in his stomach.

Work

Let’s see what kind of food should we eat :
From the example of Rashmi and Kailash
it has been clear that good , healthy and
proper food in needed to be healthy and
fit.
Under eating as well as over eating both
are bad and causes diseases.
We should take healthy and balanced diet.

PROPER FOOD OR BALANCED DIET
Proper food means the food which consists of all the
balanced nutrients. It should contain carbohydrates
proteins fats, minerals and vitamins . It also have
certain antioxidant properties. It should increase the
stamina of human body and overall human immunity
also it should make the person fit and healthy. Proper
food should be fresh and processed and made from
all natural ingredients without any kind of
adulteration. Proper food should contain meals with
fruits, cereals, vegetables, proteins, water.

About half the children in our country are deprived of proper food needed to grow and
develop properly like Rashmi and are suffering from Malnutrition.
But it is the RIGHT of every child to get proper food .
Mid - day Meal is one of the programme that is going on in our country stepping
towards in this direction .

Let’s join our hands
Like Gomati many people in our country could not get one proper meal a
day. Many a times these people died of hunger.
It is our moral duty to do something for these people.

Let's do something so that sooner or later every citizen of our country get
food to eat at least.
THANK YOU
