2.Lackofinfrastructuresuchasfoodtesting
laboratories.Thereareonly87National
AccreditationBoardfortestingand
calibrationLaboratories(NABL)accredited
Labs,whereastherearemorethan1500
privatelabsinIndia.
3.Shortageofqualifiedmanpowerand
functionalfoodtestingequipmentinstate
foodlaboratoriesandreferrallaboratories
resultedindeficienttestingoffoodsamples.

enforcementofficersinthestateswhich
severelyaffectedfoodsafetymeasures.

FSSAIregulations–whereasothercountries
haveover10,000standards.Moreover,the
listisnotregularlyreviewed.
6.FSSAIishighlyunderfundedtomonitorthe
wideningambitoffoodlaws.Also,thereare
nostandardpracticesforfoodinspection,the
processbeingmostlydiscretionary.
7.Heavyandlengthyapprovalprocedureshave
delayedthepre-launchapprovalsforproducts
fromtheFSSAIforoverayear.

In India, about 15.73 lakh people die every year due
to food poisoning. India ranks second in the world
in terms of death due to spoiled food.

“Assortedpack”meansanypackageorcontainercontainingmultipleunitsof
differentfoodproductsintendedanddisplayedforretailsaleandcomplies
withthegenerallabellingrequirementspecifiedinregulation4(8);

“Best before date”
“Bestbeforedate”meansthe
datewhichsignifiestheendofthe
periodunderanystatedstorage
conditionsduringwhichthefood
productshallremainfully
marketableandshallretainany
specificqualitiesforwhichtacit
orexpressclaimshavebeen
made,andbeyondthatdate,the
foodmaystillbeperfectlysafeto
consume,though,itsqualitymay
havediminished.However,the
productshallnotbesoldifany
stagetheproductbecomeunsafe.

“Dateofmanufacture”meansthedateonwhichthefood
productsbecomestheproductasdescribed;

in the immediate container in which it will be ultimately sold;

itselforusedasatypicalingredientofthefood,whetherornotithas

treatment,packing,packaging,transportorholdingofsuchfoodresults.
