PUNCTUATION Symbols Describing Feelings or Emotions. Without punctuation, it is very difficult for readers to know when to pause, stop, or pay special attention to something in written communications. Example: I like cooking, my grandmother and my dog. PUNCTUATION FULL STOP (.) The main use of full stop is to mark the end of a sentence that is a complete statement. EXAMPLE: My name is Ali and I am a doctor . APOSTROPHE (‘) An apostrophe is a punctuation mark used in contractions to replace missing letters. It can also show possession. EXAMPLE: You’re, I’ve, I’m 21CSE01 4

PUNCTUATION COLON (:) A colon is punctuation mark that comes before an explanation, quotation, definition or list. EXAMPLE: I Went to the store and bought a lot of fruit: apples, peaches, apricots and grapes. SEMI COLON (;) A punctuation symbol used to connect two independent clauses, if ideas expressed in sentences are related. EXAMPLE: We had too many fumbles; we lost the game. 21CSE01 5

PUNCTUATION DASH ( — ) A dash is a horizontal line that shows a pause or break in meaning, or that represents missing words or letters. EXAMPLE: My brothers—Ali and Aslam—are visiting Quetta. HYPHEN (-) A hyphen is the punctuation sign used to join words together to make a compound. Example: left-handed, Book-Loving, Well-Known 21CSE01 6

PUNCTUATION Question Mark (?) A  question mark  is a punctuation symbol placed at the end of a sentence to indicate a direct question. Example: What are you doing? COMMA (,) A comma is a punctuation mark that separates words, ideas or phrases within a sentence. EXAMPLE: The pet store has cats, dogs, and fish. 21CSE01 7

PUNCTUATION Exclamation mark (!) It is used at the end of a sentence or a short phrase which expresses very strong feeling. EXAMPLE: What a lovely view you have here! Quotation mark (“”) It is used to indicate The Repeated Statements of a person. EXAMPLE: Ali asked, “will you still be my friend?”. 21CSE01 8

PUNCTUATION Parentheses () It is a Punctuation mark used to give extra information about a word or sentence. EXAMPLE: I don’t believe she’s telling the truth (she never does). 21CSE01 9
