Functions of English Language

We use a language in order to fulfill different purposes. Example:Greeting, thanking, introducing etc. These purposes are called functions of language. We use different language items for different functions.

2. Giving Opinions Asking opinions I’d definitely say that … I’m pretty sure that … Frankly, … I strongly believe that.. I’d say that … Do you think … ? In your opinion, … ? If I said … , … ? How do you feel about.? What’s your opinion on..?

3. Partly agreeing Disagreeing That’s true, but … That’s quite true, but … I see your point, but ... You make a good point Well, you could be right. I don’t agree ! I totally disagree ! Absolutely not ! That’s not right ! I’m not sure about that

4. Offering Food Offering help Would you like..? Do you want.. Do you fancy.. Would you care for..   Will you have.. May I offer you my help? May I help you? Are you looking for something? Would you help me? What can I do?

5. Inviting someone Apologizing Are you free to…?  Would you like to …? Why don’t we …? Do you want to…? How about…?  I’m really sorry Oh dear , I am awfully sorry I’m terribly sorry Please for give me I do apologize

6. Accepting & Refusing an offer Insisting Yes, please. Sure , thank you. That’s a good idea . No, thank you . That’s alright. I Told you I can’t.. I can’t.. I really must… I am sorry to insist… I insist on…
