FOODS Food is meant as ,anything edible that may be solid, semisolid or liquid which when swallowed, digested and assimilated in the body proves useful to it. These substances not only keep the person alive but also provide energy used for growth and development ,regulate the body processes and protect the body from diseases

PHYSIOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS OF FOODS

To provide energy Human body requires energy to perform various voluntary and involuntary activities. Voluntary activities such as walking, running, standing and involuntary activities such as maintenance of body temperature, heart beat, breathing, digestion and blood circulation

For body building and repair of tissues : Protein present in our food is the important nutrient responsible for the growth of new tissues in the body and for the repair and maintenance of tissues. Excellent sources of protein are milk and milk products, pulses, egg, meat and fish.

Protection/resistance from diseases : Nutrients such as vitamins and minerals present in food provide protection from deficiency diseases. . For example vitamin A, iron and iodine

Regulation of body processes: Water and roughage (fiber) regulate the various body activities. Water is necessary in large amounts for regulating digestion, maintenance of body temperature and disposal of wastes from the body. Roughage (fiber) facilitates peristaltic movements to prevent constipation. Fresh fruits and vegetables are good source of fiber

PSYCHOLOGICAL FUNCTIONS OF FOODS Food is also an outlet of emotions. Selection, presentation and the way we eat reflects our psychology on joyous and sad occasions The food has its concern not only to the body but with human mind also

SOCIO-CULTURAL FUNCTIONS OF FOODS

Food is bringing people together. Social and cultural events are a part of life and sharing food on such occasions with relatives and friends from different castes, religions states is a symbol of love.
