job is to access the
real problem:

permanent problem?

Be prepared –shockproof
Be a good listener
Make counseling a process not a
lecture
Encourage complete discussion –plow
through ramifications
Accept counselee as a worthy person
Use open end questions rather than a
‘yes/no’ one
Don’t be an answer man
Don’t overestimate or underestimate
the problem
Reflect and clarify his statement
Listen for a theme
Distinguish between causes and
symptoms –avoid hasty conclusions
Trace the origins
