3. EPCLC Private Property. Not for sale. QUARTER 1 – LESSON 3 Jacob and Esau Sometimes we make mistakes. Huge mistakes. But with God, it's never too late to move in a new direction. In the Bible story today, there were two brothers. What were their names? (allow for responses) Jacob and Esau were brothers who didn’t make very good choices. Jacob was making stew one day while Esau was hunting. Esau got hungry and wanted some of the stew. What was Jacob’s choice? (have the children talk to their neighbor about what happened next – then talk with the group) Jacob decided to ask for Esau’s birthright for a bowl of stew. Did Esau agree? Yes he did—probably not the best choice. He sold his inheritance for a bowl of stew. Then Jacob did something else. Who remembers what it is? (allow for responses) He tricked his father so that he would get the blessing.

What was special about Jacob and Esau when they were born?  They were twins, but looked completely different.  They were five years apart.  They were both blond with blue eyes.  They were identical twins. 2.  Esau was the firstborn, which meant he would get everything his father had when his father died. What did he sell his inheritance to Jacob for? a buried treasure  a hunting trophy  a girlfriend  a bowl of food 3.  When Jacob's father was about to die, he told Esau to do something special before he blessed him. What did Jacob and his mother do while Esau was hunting? They pouted about how Esau was always the favorite son.  His mother fixed a meal and dressed Jacob up in goat's skin.  They went out to help Esau find the perfect deer.  Jacob's mother told his father to bless Jacob instead.

He promised he would hurt their father.  He promised to beat him up.  He promised to kill him.  He promised to make him go to college and do homework. 5.  Jacob ran away to his uncle Laban's house. What job did he do for his uncle?  He became a tax collector.  He became a doctor.  He became a shepherd.  He became the family teacher.

What did Jacob do with his family?  He blessed them and told them they may not see each other again.  He pulled out his family photo albums and showed them his brother's pictures.  He gathered them together and told them to make a feast for his brother.  He separated them in case something bad happened.

What did Jacob want the angel to do for him?  He wanted the angel to protect his family.  He wanted the angel to bless him.  He wanted the angel to give him money.  He wanted the angel to give him good health. 10.  Although Jacob was scared at what would happen when he saw his brother, he went out to meet Esau. What happened when Esau came to his brother Jacob?  He told Jacob goodbye and that he never wanted to see him again.  He challenged Jacob to a fight.  He gave Jacob a great big hug.   He reminded Jacob that he had sinned.
