Lesson 2: Philippine Ballet

Ballet • Another form of dance • Used to interpret stories of all kinds. • It allows the characters to come alive; not in spoken dialogue but in body movements or pantomime.

Original Filipino Ballet vividly present folktales and local fables, such as the beloved stories of Lola Basyang; as well as epics from neighboring regions, such as India’s Ramayana.

Tatlong Kuwento ni Lola Basyang . • A ballet adapatation of Severino Reyes’ folktales mga kuwento ni lola basyang . • To instill and rekindle the interest of the filipino youth in the beauty, richness and values found in Philippine literature. • The typical storytelling scene shows a grandmother sitting on a rocking chair, with her grandchildren gathered around listening to her fascinating tales.

Tatlong Kuwento ni Lola Basyang featured the following stories:

1. Ang kaptid ng tatlong marya • A fantasy story set to neo-ethnic music in a contemporary style. • It is about a hero’s fantastic journey to different kingdom in pursuit of his bewitch sisters. Music by: Joey Ayala Choreography by: Lisa Macuja Elizalde

2. Ang Mahiwagang Biyulin • A local version of Pied Piper tale where the main character mesmerizes his followers through the music of his violin. • The story imparts the moral lesson that “good triumphs over evil” Music by: Ryan Cayabyab Arranged by: Arnold Buena Choreography by: Tony Fabella

3. Ang Prinsipe ng mga ibon • A love story where princess fall in love with a bird Music by: Mon Faustino Choreography by: Osias Barroso

Second episode, Tatlo Pang Kuwento ni Lola Basyang

1. Ang Palasyo ng mga Dwende • A romantic adventure about heroine of Yani whose heart is beautiful as her appearance. • When her mother died, her father re-married and she was maltreated by her envious stepmother and stepsisters . • Until Yani falls down into the palace of dwarves where she find her missing father in a deep sleep, the story revolves around how yani saves her father from the queens spell that put him to sleep.

Choreography by: Gerardo Francisco • Shows the influence of Mindanao and the ancient Pintados through its neo-ethnic movements. Musical arrangements by: Diwa De leon • Using a hegalong, a boat like two stringed lute from Mindanao.

2. Labindalawang Masayang Prinsesa • A romantic fantasy about 12 daughters of the king . • These 12 princesses secretly leave their bedroom at night to travel to an enchanted land and dance with the princes. Choreography: Lisa Macuja –Elizalde • A fairly simple classical ballet steps with a traditional adagios or slow movements for the prince and princesses. Music by: Arnold Buena • Opm Hits such as kailangan kita and ikaw ang lahat sa akin.

3. Anting Anting • A horror comedy in which the cowardly hero human tries to overcome his fears in order to win his love. Musical arrangement: Juan Carlo Magsalin Choreography: Osias Barroso in collaboration with Michael Divinagracia.

RAMA HARI • Translated as King Rama • Philippine adaptation of the indian epic Ramayana set to music, dance and drama. • Premiere was on February 18 to 17, 1980 Music by: CCP Philhamonic Orchestra conducted by Ryan Cayabyab. Choreography: National artist, Bienvenido Lumbera and National artist, Salvador Bernal.
