Essay is an analytic, interpretative, or critical literary composition usually much shorter and less systematic and formal than a dissertation or thesis and usually dealing with its subject from a limited and often personal point of view.

When did essay writing start? Essay wiriting started in 16th century. It was first coined by a French nobleman named Michel de Montaigne, who in 1571, at 38 years of age, retired from his court and social duties.

Benefits of Writing Essays for Students Essays help students learn how to research and use evidence effectively Essays hone students’ ability to formulate and defend their own arguments Essays allow students to practice their writing skills

Types of Essay Narrative essays - A narrative essay is one that tells or narrates a story. This is usually a story about a personal experience you had, but it may also be an imaginative exploration of something you have not experienced.

Types of Essay Descriptive essays - A descriptive essay provides a detailed sensory description of something. Like narrative essays, they allow you to be more creative than most academic writing, but they are more tightly focused than narrative essays. You might describe a specific place or object, rather than telling a whole story.

Types of Essay Argumentative essays - An argumentative essay presents an extended, evidence-based argument. It requires a strong thesis statement—a clearly defined stance on your topic. Your aim is to convince the reader of your thesis using evidence (such as quotations) and analysis.

Types of Essay Expository essays An expository essay provides a clear, focused explanation of a topic. It doesn’t require an original argument, just a balanced and well-organized view of the topic.

How to write and essay?

How do you express your emotions?

Haiku is a Japanese poetic form that consists of three lines, with five syllables in the first line, seven in the second, and five in the third. The haiku developed from the hokku, the opening three lines of a longer poem known as a tanka. The haiku became a separate form of poetry in the 17th century.

Rules in writing haiku: There are no more than 17 syllables. Haiku is composed of only 3 lines. Typically, every first line of Haiku has 5 syllables, the second line has 7 syllables, and the third has 5 syllables.

Matsuo Basho the most influential haiku poet and the writer who popularized the form in the 17th century.

Matsuo Basho Bashō's poetry often focuses on the ordinary and mundane aspects of life, such as the changing of seasons, the sound of rain, or the sight of a bird in flight, but also on that lower world made of insects, rotten foliage, and excrements.

Important Element: Kigo the word, kigo, from the Japanese translates directly into English as “season word (or phrase)”. Examples: sakura (cherry blossoms) for spring, fuji (wisteria) for summer, tsuki (moon) for fall, and samushi (cold) for winter
