LESSON 2 STATES OF MATTER and THEIR CHARACTERISTICS GREEN

TARGETS Group common objects found at home and in school according to solids, liquids, and gases. ‹#› 01 Identify characteristics of solids, liquids, and gases in terms of their shape and volume. 02

SOLIDS 01

Solids have particles which are very close to each other. These particles move back and forth in a fixed position. Solids have definite mass. Hence, they also have definite volume. SOLIDS

Refers to the ability of a solid to scratch other solids. A diamond is the hardest mineral that can scratch other solids. Refers to the characteristics of solid to break easily. Refers to the characteristic of solids to be stretched or molded ELASTICITY HARDNESS BRITTLENESS Refers to the characteristics of solids to be bent, spread, or shaped when pounded with a hammer or roller. MALLEABILITY CHARACTERISTICS of SOLID

LIQUIDS 02

Liquids also have particles which move back and forth. But these particles are farther apart. So, the particles slide over each other. This movement causes liquids to follow the shape of their container. Liquids have the ability to flow. They are fluid. This property is called viscosity . LIQUIDS

Liquids have definite volume but do not have definite shape. When you pour a small glass of juice into a cup, the shape of the juice changes. But its volume stays the same. Some liquids are transparent. Others are sticky such as condensed milk and mayonnaise. Other liquids like alcohol evaporate easily. LIQUIDS

GASES 3

Air is all around you. It is and example of the gaseous state of matter. Like liquids, gases are also fluids. They need containers to hold them. You can’t see the air you breath. But it fills up and take the shape of the room or car that you are in. GASES

Gases do not have definite shape or volume. They follow the shape and size of their containers. The particles move fast enough to bear away from one another. They also move in many different directions. GASES
